Metamerism — Serial Repetition of Segments in Annelida

📚 Practice Concept
📖 NCERT Source

In some animals, the body is externally and internally divided into segments with a serial repetition of at least some organs. For example, in earthworm, the body shows this pattern called metameric segmentation and the phenomenon is known as metamerism.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is Metamerism?
Metamerism refers to the phenomenon where an organism's body is divided into repeating units (metameres or segments) both externally AND internally. Each segment contains a repetition of at least some organs — in earthworms, this includes paired nephridia (excretory organs), nerve ganglia, blood vessels, and muscles. This is NOT the same as simple external banding. External appearance alone does not constitute metamerism — the internal organ repetition is equally essential.
What is the key NEET fact about Metamerism?
TRUE metamerism = external + internal organ repetition. Annelida only.
How do you remember Metamerism for NEET?
META = MANY repeated units, inside AND outside
