Predation & Symbiotic Interactions — NEET Biology

✅ Asked in NEET 2026
📖 NCERT Source

Both the species benefit in mutualism and both lose in competition in their interactions with each other. In both parasitism and predation only one species benefits (parasite and predator, respectively) and the interaction is detrimental to the other species (host and prey, respectively). The interaction where one species is benefitted and the other is neither benefitted nor harmed is called commensalism. In amensalism on the other hand one species is harmed whereas the other is unaffected. Predation, parasitism and commensalism share a common characteristic – the interacting species live closely together.

How NTA Uses This Concept

NTA tests this concept by asking students to differentiate between predation, parasitism, commensalism, and amensalism based on who benefits or loses. The core idea: predation benefits only the predator while harming the prey. Students often confuse predation with parasitism or mistakenly think both organisms must benefit. The trap is forgetting that parasitism involves sustained feeding (one-sided benefit), while predation involves killing. Remember: In predation, the predator gains nutrition and prey loses life; in parasitism, the parasite gains but host survives; in commensalism, one benefits and one is unaffected; in amensalism, one is harmed and one is unaffected. This has appeared 6 times because NTA loves testing relationship classifications.
