Why is there no pith in a monocot stem?

Because the vascular bundles are scattered all through the ground tissue instead of forming a ring. In a dicot stem, the ring of bundles separates the inner pith from the outer cortex. In a monocot the bundles are spread everywhere, so the ground tissue is not split into cortex and pith. NCERT calls it a large, conspicuous, undifferentiated parenchymatous ground tissue.

Are the vascular bundles in a monocot stem open or closed?

They are conjoint and CLOSED. Closed means there is no cambium between the xylem and phloem. This is why a monocot stem cannot carry out normal secondary growth (no increase in girth by a cambial ring). NEET loves this point, dicot stem = open, monocot stem = closed.

Why are the vascular bundles scattered in a monocot stem?

This is the diagnostic monocot feature. During development the bundles do not line up in a ring, they stay spread out in the ground tissue. Is phloem parenchyma present in a monocot stem?

No. In a monocot stem the phloem parenchyma is ABSENT. The phloem has only sieve tubes and companion cells. This is a common NEET trap, dicot phloem has phloem parenchyma, monocot stem phloem does not.

What is the hypodermis of a monocot stem made of?

The hypodermis of a monocot stem is SCLERENCHYMATOUS (dead, thick-walled cells for support). Do not confuse it with the dicot stem, where the hypodermis is collenchymatous. NEET 2025 tested this exact difference.
