The vascular tissue system is made of two complex tissues, xylem and phloem, which together form vascular bundles. What exactly is the vascular tissue system made of?
It is made of two complex permanent tissues: xylem (carries water and minerals up) and phloem (carries food). Together, xylem and phloem form a unit called a vascular bundle. NEET note: the vascular system is one of the three tissue systems, along with epidermal and ground tissue systems.
What is the difference between open and closed vascular bundles?
The difference is cambium. In open bundles, a strip of cambium sits between xylem and phloem, so the plant can make secondary xylem and phloem (secondary growth). Open bundles are seen in dicot stems. In closed bundles there is no cambium, so no secondary tissue forms. Closed bundles are seen in monocots. Memory: Open = cambium present, secondary growth possible.
What is the difference between radial and conjoint vascular bundles?
This is about arrangement. In radial bundles, xylem and phloem lie on different radii (alternate patches), seen in roots. In conjoint bundles, xylem and phloem lie together on the same radius, seen in stems and leaves. In conjoint bundles the phloem is usually only on the outer side of xylem.
Why are monocot vascular bundles called closed?
Because monocots have no cambium between their xylem and phloem. Without cambium they cannot form secondary xylem and phloem, so no secondary growth happens. That is why monocots like grasses and palms do not thicken like dicot trees. NEET loves this: monocot stem = conjoint AND closed.
Are open/closed and radial/conjoint the same classification?
No, they are two separate rules describing the same bundle. Open vs closed is about cambium (secondary growth). Radial vs conjoint is about the position of xylem and phloem. A dicot stem bundle is conjoint and open; a monocot stem bundle is conjoint and closed; a root bundle is radial.
