Heart Chambers in Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals
Biology · Animal Kingdom · NEET
Fish have a 2-chambered heart, amphibians and reptiles have a 3-chambered heart, and birds and mammals have a 4-chambered heart. The one big exception you must remember is the crocodile: it is a reptile but has a 4-chambered heart. Memory hook: "2-3-3-4-4, but croco jumps to 4" (Fish-Amphibian-Reptile-Bird-Mammal).
Heart chambers increase from fish (2) to birds and mammals (4). The crocodile is the key exception: it is a reptile but has a fully 4-chambered heart, so never say "all reptiles are 3-chambered" in NEET.
Your doubts, answered
How many chambers does a fish heart have, and what are they?
A fish heart has 2 chambers: one atrium (auricle) and one ventricle. It is called a venous heart because it pumps only deoxygenated blood. This blood goes to the gills to get oxygen, then flows to the body. So in fish, blood passes through the heart only once per full circuit (single circulation).
Do reptiles have 3 or 4 chambered hearts? Which is correct for NEET?
Most reptiles have a 3-chambered heart (two atria and one ventricle). But the ventricle is incompletely divided by a partial septum, so it is not fully separated. The exception is the crocodile, which has a true 4-chambered heart. NEET loves this: if a question says 'ALL reptiles have a 3-chambered heart', it is WRONG because of crocodiles.
Why does the crocodile have a 4-chambered heart if it is a reptile?
The crocodile's ventricle is fully divided into two by a complete septum, giving 2 atria + 2 ventricles = 4 chambers. This is an exception you must memorise. NCERT clearly states crocodiles, birds and mammals have a 4-chambered heart. For NEET, always treat crocodile separately from other reptiles.
What is the difference between an amphibian and a reptile heart?
Both amphibians and (most) reptiles have 3 chambers (2 atria + 1 ventricle). The difference is in the ventricle: in reptiles (except crocodile) the single ventricle is partly divided by an incomplete septum, so mixing of blood is reduced. In amphibians the ventricle is undivided. So a reptile heart is a bit more advanced than an amphibian heart, though both are 3-chambered.
Which vertebrate class has only 2 heart chambers?
Only fishes (Pisces) have a 2-chambered heart. This includes both cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) and bony fish (Osteichthyes). No other vertebrate class has 2 chambers. Cyclostomes (jawless fish like lampreys) also have a 2-chambered heart.
Do birds and mammals have the same number of heart chambers?
Yes. Both birds (Aves) and mammals (Mammalia) have a 4-chambered heart with 2 atria and 2 ventricles. A 4-chambered heart fully separates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, which supports the high energy needs of warm-blooded (homeothermic) animals for constant body temperature.
⚠️ The NEET trap ✗ All reptiles have a three-chambered heart. ✓ Most reptiles have a 3-chambered heart, but crocodiles have a 4-chambered heart, so the statement 'ALL reptiles have a 3-chambered heart' is FALSE. 🧠 When a statement says ALL reptiles, think CROCODILE first. The crocodile breaks the reptile rule with its 4-chambered heart.
Real NEET questions
NEET 2016 Phase 2
Choose the correct statement.
A · All mammals are viviparous
B · All cyclostomes do not possess jaws and paired fins ✓
C · All reptiles have a three-chambered heart
D · All pisces have gills covered by an operculum
Solution: Cyclostomes lack jaws and paired fins, so B is correct. A is wrong because egg-laying mammals (monotremes) exist. C is wrong because crocodiles have a 4-chambered heart, not 3. D is wrong because only bony fish (Osteichthyes) have an operculum; cartilaginous fish do not. This question directly tests the crocodile heart exception.
NEET 2016 Phase 1
Which characteristic feature always holds true for the corresponding group of animals?
A · Cartilaginous endoskeleton - Chondrichthyes ✓
B · Viviparous - Mammalia
C · Mouth with an upper and a lower jaw - Chordata
D · 3-chambered heart with one incompletely divided ventricle - Reptilia
Solution: A is always true: Chondrichthyes always have a cartilaginous endoskeleton. B fails (monotremes lay eggs). C fails (Cyclostomata are chordates but lack jaws). D fails because 'ALL reptiles = 3-chambered' is not always true: crocodiles have a 4-chambered heart. Again, the crocodile exception makes the reptile heart option wrong.
ReNEET 2026
Statement I: The class name Reptilia refers to creeping or crawling mode of locomotion. Statement II: All organisms belonging to Reptilia have a three-chambered heart.
A · Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
B · Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
C · Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect ✓
D · Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
Solution: Statement I is correct: 'Reptilia' comes from the Latin for creeping/crawling. Statement II is incorrect: the heart is usually 3-chambered, but crocodiles have a 4-chambered heart, so 'ALL' reptiles is false. Correct answer is C. This is the crocodile trap tested again.

What is the correct order of heart chambers from fish to mammals?
Fish = 2 chambers, Amphibians = 3, Reptiles = 3 (crocodile = 4), Birds = 4, Mammals = 4. Remember it as 2-3-3-4-4 with the crocodile exception.
Which animals have a 4-chambered heart?
Crocodiles, birds and mammals have a 4-chambered heart with 2 atria and 2 ventricles. This keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood fully separate.
What is a venous heart?
A venous heart, found in fishes, pumps only deoxygenated (venous) blood. The blood is oxygenated in the gills and then flows to the rest of the body without returning to the heart first.
Why is the reptile heart called 3-chambered when the ventricle is divided?
In most reptiles the single ventricle has only a partial (incomplete) septum, so it is counted as one chamber. That is why the total is 3 chambers, not 4. Only the crocodile has a complete septum, giving 4.
Is the frog heart 3-chambered?
Yes. A frog is an amphibian, and amphibians have a 3-chambered heart with 2 atria and 1 undivided ventricle.
