Phylum Chordata: The Three Fundamental Features

Biology · Animal Kingdom · NEET

Phylum Chordata has THREE fundamental features that all its members show at some stage of life: (1) a notochord, (2) a dorsal, hollow nerve cord, and (3) paired pharyngeal gill slits. If an animal has all three, it is a chordate. Memory hook: "N-N-G" = Notochord, Nerve cord (dorsal hollow), Gill slits (pharyngeal). This is a very common NEET question, so learn these three exactly.
Three Fundamental Features of Chordata1. Dorsal hollownerve cord (top)2. Notochord(support rod)3. Paired pharyngeal gill slitsheartVentral heart (bottom)head
A chordate body plan: the dorsal hollow nerve cord lies on top, the notochord (support rod) lies just below it, paired pharyngeal gill slits open at the front, and the heart is ventral (bottom). These three - notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, paired gill slits - are the fundamental features.

Your doubts, answered

What are the three fundamental features of Phylum Chordata?

NCERT says chordates are fundamentally characterised by THREE features: (1) a notochord, (2) a dorsal, hollow nerve cord, and (3) paired pharyngeal gill slits. These three define a chordate. Note the word 'fundamental' - only these three are the defining trio. Other traits like post-anal tail, closed circulation and ventral heart are also present but are usually listed as supporting features.

Do all chordates keep the notochord throughout their whole life?

No. The notochord is a rod-like support structure present AT SOME STAGE of life. In Cephalochordata it stays head-to-tail for whole life. In Urochordata it is only in the larval tail. In Vertebrata (us, fishes, frogs) the notochord is present in the embryo only, and later it is replaced by the vertebral column (backbone). So 'present at some stage' is the safe answer for NEET.

Is the chordate nerve cord dorsal or ventral, solid or hollow?

In chordates the nerve cord is DORSAL (on the back side), HOLLOW (tube-like), and SINGLE. This is a top NEET trap. In non-chordates (like Annelida, Arthropoda) the nerve cord is VENTRAL (belly side), SOLID, and DOUBLE. So if a statement says 'mid-dorsal solid double nerve cord', it is WRONG for chordates.

Is the chordate heart ventral or dorsal?

The chordate heart is VENTRAL (on the belly side). In non-chordates, the heart is dorsal if present. NEET 2023 and NEET 2024 both tested this exact swap. Easy trick: chordate has nerve cord on TOP (dorsal) and heart on the BOTTOM (ventral) - they are on opposite sides.

Are chordates coelomate or pseudocoelomate?

Chordates are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical, TRUE COELOMATES with organ-system level of organisation and a CLOSED circulatory system. They are NOT pseudocoelomate (that is Aschelminthes/roundworms). NEET 2023 marked the statement 'triploblastic pseudocoelomate animals' as WRONG for chordates.

What is the difference between the notochord and the nerve cord?

They are two different structures. The NOTOCHORD is a flexible rod that gives skeletal SUPPORT and lies below the nerve cord. The DORSAL HOLLOW NERVE CORD is part of the NERVOUS system and lies above the notochord, on the back. One supports the body (notochord), the other carries nerve signals (nerve cord). Do not mix them up.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Chordates have a mid-dorsal, solid and double nerve cord, and a dorsal heart.
Chordates have a dorsal, HOLLOW and SINGLE nerve cord, and a VENTRAL heart. Solid double nerve cord and dorsal heart are NON-chordate features.
🧠 Nerve cord: dorsal + hollow + single = chordate. Heart sits ventral (opposite side to the nerve cord). NTA loves swapping these two words.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023 Phase 1

Select the correct statements with reference to chordates. A. Presence of a mid-dorsal, solid and double nerve cord. B. Presence of closed circulatory system. C. Presence of paired pharyngeal gill slits. D. Presence of dorsal heart. E. Triploblastic pseudocoelomate animals.

A · A, C and D only
B · B and C only
C · B, D and E only
D · C, D and E only
Solution: Chordates have a dorsal, HOLLOW and SINGLE nerve cord, so A is wrong. The heart is VENTRAL, so D is wrong. Chordates are triploblastic COELOMATES (not pseudocoelomates), so E is wrong. They DO have a closed circulatory system (B) and paired pharyngeal gill slits (C). Correct = B and C only.
NEET 2024

The following are the statements about non-chordates: A. Pharynx is perforated by gill slits. B. Notochord is absent. C. Central nervous system is dorsal. D. Heart is dorsal if present. E. Post anal tail is absent. Choose the most appropriate answer.

A · A, B & D only
B · B, D & E only
C · B, C & D only
D · A & C only
Solution: For non-chordates: notochord is ABSENT (B correct), gill slits are ABSENT so A is wrong, the CNS/nerve cord is VENTRAL not dorsal so C is wrong, heart is dorsal if present (D correct), and post-anal tail is absent (E correct). So B, D and E are the non-chordate statements. This is the mirror image of the three chordate features.
ReNEET 2026

Which of the following is not a characteristic of chordates?

A · Presence of notochord
B · Central nervous system is dorsal
C · Absence of gills
D · Presence of post-anal part (tail)
Solution: Chordates HAVE paired pharyngeal gill slits, so 'absence of gills' is NOT a chordate characteristic. Notochord (feature 1), dorsal nerve cord (feature 2) and post-anal tail (supporting feature) are all correct chordate traits. Answer = C.

Frequently asked

What are the 3 fundamental features of Chordata in one line?

Notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, and paired pharyngeal gill slits. Remember the trio as 'N-N-G'.

Which nerve cord do chordates have?

A single, dorsal (back side), hollow (tube-like) nerve cord. Non-chordates have a ventral, solid, double nerve cord.

Where is the chordate heart located?

On the ventral (belly) side. Non-chordates have a dorsal heart if a heart is present.

Are all chordates vertebrates?

No. All vertebrates are chordates, but not all chordates are vertebrates. Urochordata and Cephalochordata are chordates without a backbone.

Are chordates coelomate?

Yes. Chordates are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical, true coelomates with organ-system level of organisation and a closed circulatory system.
