R.H. Whittaker proposed it in 1969. This is a very common one-line NEET fact. Remember: Whittaker = 1969 = Five Kingdoms. Do not mix him up with Linnaeus (two kingdoms) or Carl Woese (three domains). NEET has asked the name-plus-year directly.
Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. This order goes from simple to complex body organisation: Monera (prokaryotes) is simplest, then Protista (single-celled eukaryotes), then Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia (most complex, with organ-system level). NEET 2025 tested this exact increasing-complexity order.
The old two kingdom system (Plantae and Animalia by Linnaeus) grouped very different organisms together. It did NOT separate prokaryotes from eukaryotes, unicellular from multicellular, or photosynthetic from non-photosynthetic organisms. For example, bacteria and blue-green algae (prokaryotes) sat with trees (eukaryotes), and fungi (heterotrophs) sat with green plants (autotrophs) just because all had a cell wall. Many organisms did not fit either box, so two kingdoms were inadequate.
Five criteria: (1) cell structure (prokaryotic or eukaryotic), (2) body organisation (cellular, tissue, or organ-system level), (3) mode of nutrition (autotrophic or heterotrophic), (4) reproduction, and (5) phylogenetic (evolutionary) relationships. Note: 'presence of flagellum' is NOT a criterion - NEET 2026 used this as a trap.
Fungi are heterotrophic (they cannot make their own food), while green plants are autotrophic. Also, fungal cell walls are made of chitin, but plant cell walls are made of cellulose. Because nutrition and cell wall differ, fungi got their own Kingdom Fungi instead of being grouped under Plants.
Kingdom Protista. It includes Chrysophytes, Dinoflagellates, Euglenoids, Slime moulds, and Protozoans. All Protista have a defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. NEET directly asked which kingdom includes Chrysophytes, Euglenoids, Dinoflagellates and Slime moulds - the answer is Protista.

Yes, NCERT and NEET still use Whittaker's five kingdoms as the base. A newer three-domain system splits Monera into two domains, giving six kingdoms, but you learn that only in higher classes. For NEET, master the five kingdoms first.
They do NOT fit into any of the five kingdoms. Viruses, viroids, and prions are non-cellular (acellular), so Whittaker left them out. Lichens are also not placed in the five kingdom system. NCERT introduces them separately at the end of the chapter.

Linnaeus used two kingdoms (Plantae and Animalia) based mainly on gross morphology. Whittaker used five kingdoms based on cell structure, body organisation, nutrition, reproduction, and evolution - a much more scientific and phylogenetic system.
