The cell wall is a non-living, rigid outer layer found only in plants and fungi (not animals). In plants it is made mainly of cellulose; in fungi it is made of chitin. The middle lamella (calcium pectate) glues neighbouring cells together, and plasmodesmata are tiny channels that connect the cytoplasm of adjacent cells. Is the cell wall living or non-living?

The cell wall is NON-LIVING and rigid. This is a very common NEET trap. Even though it surrounds a living cell, the wall itself is a non-living secretion made by the cell. NCERT says clearly: 'a non-living rigid structure called the cell wall forms an outer covering.' It gives shape, protects from mechanical damage and infection, helps cell-to-cell interaction, and blocks unwanted large molecules.

What is a plant cell wall made of vs a fungal cell wall?

Plant cell wall = mainly CELLULOSE (plus hemicellulose, pectins and proteins). Fungal cell wall = CHITIN and polysaccharides (NOT pure cellulose). Algae cell wall = cellulose, galactans, mannans and minerals like calcium carbonate. NEET loves testing 'all fungi have a purely cellulosic wall' as a WRONG statement. Remember: Fungi and arthropod exoskeleton both use chitin.

What is the middle lamella made of and what does it do?

The middle lamella is a layer made mainly of CALCIUM PECTATE. Its job is to hold or 'glue' neighbouring plant cells together. Think of it as the cement between two cells. It is the first layer formed during cell division (from the cell plate) and lies OUTSIDE the primary wall, between two adjacent cells.

What are plasmodesmata and why do they matter?

Plasmodesmata are tiny cytoplasmic channels that pass THROUGH the cell wall and middle lamella. They connect the cytoplasm of neighbouring cells, allowing them to share materials and signals. NCERT: 'The cell wall and middle lamellae may be traversed by plasmodesmata which connect the cytoplasm of neighbouring cells.' They are abundant in meristematic (dividing) cells.

What is the difference between primary and secondary cell wall?

The PRIMARY wall is the wall of a young plant cell. It is thin and CAN grow. As the cell matures, this ability to grow gradually reduces, and a SECONDARY wall forms on the INNER side (towards the plasma membrane). So the order from outside to inside is: middle lamella, then primary wall, then secondary wall, then plasma membrane.

Do all cells have a cell wall?

No. Only PLANTS, FUNGI, algae and bacteria have cell walls. ANIMAL cells do NOT have a cell wall. Also, among prokaryotes, Mycoplasma is the exception that has NO cell wall. So 'cell wall present' cannot be used to identify an animal cell.
