The cell wall is NON-LIVING and rigid. This is a very common NEET trap. Even though it surrounds a living cell, the wall itself is a non-living secretion made by the cell. NCERT says clearly: 'a non-living rigid structure called the cell wall forms an outer covering.' It gives shape, protects from mechanical damage and infection, helps cell-to-cell interaction, and blocks unwanted large molecules.
Plant cell wall = mainly CELLULOSE (plus hemicellulose, pectins and proteins). Fungal cell wall = CHITIN and polysaccharides (NOT pure cellulose). The middle lamella is a layer made mainly of CALCIUM PECTATE. Its job is to hold or 'glue' neighbouring plant cells together. Think of it as the cement between two cells. It is the first layer formed during cell division (from the cell plate) and lies OUTSIDE the primary wall, between two adjacent cells.
