Darwin used this as evidence for evolution with one simple argument: if humans can make new breeds in centuries, then nature (natural selection) could easily do the same over millions of years. Is artificial selection the same as natural selection?
No. In artificial selection, HUMANS decide which individuals get to breed, choosing traits useful to us (more milk, bigger grains). In natural selection, the ENVIRONMENT decides which individuals survive and reproduce. Both work by picking certain variations over others, so the mechanism is similar, but the selecting agent is different: man vs nature.
How exactly does artificial selection PROVE evolution?
It is an evidence, not the mechanism. Darwin's logic: humans created many different dog breeds, cattle breeds, and crop varieties from wild ancestors in just a few hundred years by selective breeding. If that much change is possible in centuries with human selection, then nature had millions of years and could produce far bigger change through natural selection. So visible man-made change makes natural evolution believable.
What type of natural selection does artificial selection resemble?
Directional selection. When breeders keep choosing cows with the highest milk yield, they push the population mean toward one extreme (high yield) generation after generation. This is directional change, not stabilising (which favours the average) or disruptive (which favours both extremes). NEET 2017 tested this exact idea.
Are dog breeds and crop varieties evolution by anthropogenic action?
Yes. Do the different dog breeds become different species?
