Excretion is the process of removing harmful nitrogenous and other metabolic wastes from the body to keep the internal environment stable. The main excretory products are ammonia, urea and uric acid (nitrogenous wastes), plus carbon dioxide, water and extra ions like Na+, K+, Cl-, phosphate and sulphate. Excretion pathway: body cells make wastes (ammonia, urea, uric acid, CO2, excess water and ions) which are then removed by the kidneys, lungs, liver and skin. Egestion of faeces is separate and is not excretion.

Is excretion the same as removing faeces (egestion)?

No, and this is the trap NEET loves. Excretion removes metabolic wastes made INSIDE the cells (like urea from protein breakdown). Egestion removes undigested food (faeces) that was never absorbed into the body. Faeces is not a true excretory product because it was never part of the cell's metabolism.

Is carbon dioxide an excretory product?

Yes. NCERT clearly lists CO2 as an excretory product along with ammonia, urea, uric acid, water and ions. CO2 is a waste of cellular respiration and is removed mainly by the lungs. So excretion is not only about the kidney.

What is the difference between excretion and secretion?

Secretion is the release of a USEFUL substance (like enzymes, hormones or bile) that the body still needs for a function. Excretion is the removal of a HARMFUL or useless waste. Same word ending, opposite purpose.

Why must these wastes be removed at all?

Wastes like ammonia are very toxic. If they build up they damage cells and disturb the balance of water and ions (homeostasis). Excretion keeps the internal environment steady so enzymes and cells can work normally.

Are water and ions really excretory products if the body needs them?

Yes, but only the EXCESS is excreted. The body accumulates extra water and ions (Na+, K+, Cl-, phosphate, sulphate) from food and metabolism. Excretion removes the surplus while keeping the amount the body needs.
