Humans have 12 pairs of ribs. The first 7 pairs are true ribs (joined to the sternum by hyaline cartilage), pairs 8-10 are false or vertebrochondral ribs (joined to the 7th rib, not directly to the sternum), and pairs 11-12 are floating ribs (not connected in front at all). Memory hook: "7 True, 3 False, 2 Floating" adds up to 12 pairs; every rib is bicephalic (two heads) at its back end.
The human rib cage: 7 pairs of true ribs (green) reach the sternum via cartilage, 3 pairs of false ribs (orange) join the 7th rib, and 2 pairs of floating ribs (red) stay free in front. All ribs are bicephalic at the vertebral end.
Your doubts, answered
How many pairs of ribs do humans have, and how are they split?
Humans have 12 pairs of ribs (24 ribs total). NEET loves the split: 7 pairs true ribs + 3 pairs false (vertebrochondral) ribs + 2 pairs floating ribs = 12 pairs. Note the question may ask 'pairs' (answer 12) or 'ribs' (answer 24), so read carefully.
What is the difference between true, false and floating ribs?
True ribs (pairs 1-7) attach dorsally to thoracic vertebrae and ventrally to the sternum through hyaline cartilage. False/vertebrochondral ribs (pairs 8, 9, 10) do NOT reach the sternum directly; they join the 7th rib in front with hyaline cartilage. Floating ribs (pairs 11, 12) are free in front, connected only to the vertebral column at the back.
Why is every rib called bicephalic?
Bicephalic means 'two-headed'. Each rib has two articulation (joint) surfaces on its dorsal (back) end where it connects to the vertebral column. NEET 2026 trapped students with 'all ribs except the last 2 are bicephalic' - that is WRONG; ALL 12 pairs, including the floating ribs, are bicephalic.
What three parts form the rib cage?
The rib cage is formed by three things together: the thoracic vertebrae (back), the 12 pairs of ribs (sides), and the sternum (front midline). NCERT states this word-for-word, so remember all three, not just the ribs.
What is the sternum and where is it located?
The sternum (breast bone) is a flat bone lying on the ventral (front) midline of the thorax. The true ribs attach to it through hyaline cartilage. Because it is a flat bone, NEET has matched 'sternum' with 'flat bones' in match-the-column questions.
Are false ribs and floating ribs the same thing?
No. This is the most common mix-up. False ribs (vertebrochondral, pairs 8-10) DO connect in front, but indirectly, by joining the 7th rib's cartilage. Floating ribs (pairs 11-12) have NO ventral connection at all. Floating ribs are a special sub-group; all floating ribs are false in the loose sense, but NCERT names 8-10 as the false/vertebrochondral set and 11-12 separately as floating.
⚠️ The NEET trap ✗ The 8th, 9th and 10th ribs (false ribs) are not connected to the sternum, so students call them 'floating ribs'. ✓ False (vertebrochondral) ribs 8-10 DO connect in front indirectly, by joining the 7th rib through hyaline cartilage. Only pairs 11 and 12, which have no ventral connection at all, are the floating ribs. 🧠 False rib joins the 7th rib; floating rib joins nothing in front. Do not merge them.
Real NEET questions
2017
Out of 'X' pairs of ribs in humans only 'Y' pairs are true ribs. Select the option that correctly represents values of X and Y and provides their explanation:
A · X = 12, Y = 7; True ribs are attached dorsally to vertebral column and ventrally to the sternum ✓
B · X = 12, Y = 5; True ribs are attached dorsally to vertebral column and sternum on the two ends
C · X = 24, Y = 7; True ribs are dorsally attached to vertebral column but are free on ventral side
D · X = 24, Y = 12; True ribs are dorsally attached to vertebral column but are free on ventral side
Solution: Humans have 12 pairs of ribs (X = 12); the first seven pairs are true ribs (Y = 7), each connected dorsally to a thoracic vertebra and ventrally to the sternum via hyaline cartilage. NCERT Ch 17: 'seven pairs of ribs are called true ribs.'

Select the correct option.
A · 8th, 9th and 10th pairs of ribs articulate directly with the sternum.
B · 11th and 12th pairs of ribs are connected to the sternum with the help of hyaline cartilage.
C · Each rib is a flat thin bone and all the ribs are connected dorsally to the thoracic vertebrae and ventrally to the sternum.
D · There are seven pairs of vertebrosternal, three pairs of vertebrochondral and two pairs of vertebral ribs. ✓
Solution: The 7 true (vertebrosternal) pairs reach the sternum; the 8th-10th (vertebrochondral/false) pairs join the 7th rib, not the sternum directly; the 11th-12th (vertebral/floating) pairs have no ventral connection. So option D's count 7 + 3 + 2 is correct. A, B and C misstate the attachments.

Match the columns. Column I: (a) Floating Ribs (b) Acromion (c) Scapula (d) Glenoid cavity. Column II: (i) Located between second and seventh ribs (ii) Head of the Humerus (iii) Clavicle (iv) Do not connect with the sternum.
A · (a)-(iii); (b)-(ii); (c)-(iv); (d)-(i)
B · (a)-(iv); (b)-(iii); (c)-(i); (d)-(ii) ✓
C · (a)-(ii); (b)-(iv); (c)-(i); (d)-(iii)
D · (a)-(i); (b)-(i); (c)-(ii); (d)-(iv)
Solution: Floating ribs (11th, 12th) do not connect with the sternum (iv). The acromion of the scapular spine articulates with the clavicle (iii). The scapula lies between the 2nd and 7th ribs (i). The glenoid cavity holds the head of the humerus (ii). Hence (a)-(iv), (b)-(iii), (c)-(i), (d)-(ii).

There are 7 pairs of true ribs (pairs 1-7). Each attaches to a thoracic vertebra at the back and to the sternum in front through hyaline cartilage.
What are vertebrochondral ribs?
Vertebrochondral ribs are the false ribs, pairs 8, 9 and 10. They do not reach the sternum directly; they join the cartilage of the 7th rib in front. 'Vertebro' means vertebra (back attachment) and 'chondral' means cartilage (front link).
Which ribs are floating ribs?
The 11th and 12th pairs are floating ribs. They attach to the vertebral column at the back but stay free in front, with no connection to the sternum or to any other rib.
Which three structures form the rib cage?
The thoracic vertebrae, the 12 pairs of ribs, and the sternum together form the rib cage, according to NCERT.
Are all ribs bicephalic?
Yes. All 12 pairs of ribs are bicephalic, meaning each has two articulation surfaces (two heads) on its dorsal end. NEET 2026 tested this - the floating ribs are bicephalic too.
Is the sternum a flat bone or a long bone?
The sternum is a flat bone located on the ventral midline of the thorax. NEET has matched it with the 'flat bones' category in column-matching questions.
