Is smooth muscle striated or non-striated?

Smooth muscle is NON-striated (unstriated). It has no light and dark bands under the microscope because the actin and myosin filaments are not arranged in neat repeating sarcomeres. This smooth appearance is exactly why NCERT calls it smooth muscle. Only skeletal and cardiac muscle show striations.

Why is smooth muscle called involuntary muscle?

Its activity is NOT under the voluntary control of the nervous system — you cannot decide to move it by will. It is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. That is why it works on its own, for example pushing food through the digestive tract and moving gametes through the genital tract.

What shape are smooth muscle cells and how many nuclei do they have?

Each smooth muscle cell is spindle-shaped (fusiform) — thick in the middle and tapering (pointed) at both ends. Each cell has ONLY ONE nucleus, placed at the centre. This contrasts with skeletal muscle fibres, which are long, cylindrical and multinucleate.

Where is smooth muscle found in the body?

Smooth muscle lines the inner walls of hollow visceral organs: the alimentary canal (stomach, intestine), blood vessels, and the reproductive/genital tract. Because it sits in these visceral organs, it is also called visceral muscle. It is NOT attached to bones.

Does smooth muscle have intercalated discs?

No. Intercalated discs are junctions found ONLY between cardiac (heart) muscle cells. Smooth muscle does not have them. This is a very common NEET trap — a question may wrongly list intercalated discs as a feature of smooth muscle to test you.
