Hypogynous, Perigynous and Epigynous Flowers: Position of Ovary

Biology · Morphology of Flowering Plants · NEET

Flowers are grouped by where the calyx, corolla and androecium sit compared to the ovary. In a hypogynous flower the ovary is on top (superior), so the other parts sit below it (mustard, china rose, brinjal). In a perigynous flower the ovary is half inferior, with other parts on the rim of the thalamus at the same level (rose, plum, peach). In an epigynous flower the thalamus grows up and covers the ovary, so the ovary is inferior and other parts sit above it (guava, cucumber, sunflower ray florets). Memory hook: HYPO = ovary HIGH, EPI = ovary hidden below, PERI = ovary at the perimeter level.

Ovary position rises then sinks: hypogynous keeps the ovary highest (superior, other parts below), perigynous holds it at rim level (half inferior), and epigynous buries it under a fused thalamus (inferior, other parts above). Red lines show where sepals, petals and stamens attach.

Your doubts, answered

Is a hypogynous flower superior or inferior ovary?

Hypogynous means the ovary is superior. The gynoecium sits at the highest point on the thalamus, and the calyx, corolla and androecium arise below it. NEET examples are mustard, china rose and brinjal. Simple link: hypo = below, so the OTHER parts are below the ovary, which puts the ovary on top (superior).

Which flowers have a half-inferior ovary?

A half-inferior ovary is found in perigynous flowers. Here the gynoecium is in the centre and the other floral parts sit on the rim of the thalamus at almost the same level as the ovary. NCERT examples are plum, rose and peach. This is a favourite NEET match-the-column trap, so lock these three examples.

What is the difference between perigynous and epigynous?

In perigynous flowers the thalamus rim rises only to the same level as the ovary (ovary half inferior, other parts around it) as in rose and plum. In epigynous flowers the thalamus grows up and fully encloses and fuses with the ovary, so the ovary is inferior and the other parts arise clearly above it, as in guava, cucumber and sunflower ray florets.

Is mustard hypogynous or epigynous?

Mustard is hypogynous, so its ovary is superior. NEET has repeatedly matched hypogynous with mustard. Do not confuse it with cucumber or guava, which are epigynous (inferior ovary).

Why is guava called an epigynous flower?

In guava the margin of the thalamus grows upward and completely encloses the ovary, fusing with it. So the ovary lies below the calyx, corolla and androecium, which arise above it. An ovary in this position is inferior, and such a flower is epigynous. Cucumber and sunflower ray florets follow the same pattern.

What type of ovary do sunflower ray florets have?

Sunflower ray florets have an inferior ovary because they are epigynous. The thalamus grows up around the ovary, so other floral parts sit above it. NEET 2020 asked exactly this and the answer was inferior ovary.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Rose has a superior (hypogynous) ovary because the flower looks open and the ovary seems on top.
Rose is a perigynous flower with a half-inferior ovary. The thalamus forms a cup and the other parts sit on its rim at the same level as the ovary. Perigynous pairs with rose, plum and peach in NEET matching questions.
🧠 If the question says half inferior, think perigynous, and remember the NCERT trio: plum, rose, peach.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023 Phase 2

Match the following: (A) Zygomorphic (B) Hypogynous (C) Perigynous (D) Epigynous with examples (I) Mustard (II) Plum (III) Cassia (IV) Cucumber.

A · (A)-(IV), (B)-(I), (C)-(III), (D)-(II)
B · (A)-(III), (B)-(I), (C)-(II), (D)-(IV)
C · (A)-(I), (B)-(II), (C)-(IV), (D)-(III)
D · (A)-(I), (B)-(II), (C)-(III), (D)-(IV)
Solution: Zygomorphic = Cassia (III), Hypogynous = mustard (I, superior ovary), Perigynous = plum (II, half-inferior ovary), Epigynous = cucumber (IV, inferior ovary). So A-III, B-I, C-II, D-IV, which is option B.
NEET 2024

Identify the type of flowers based on the position of calyx, corolla and androecium with respect to the ovary from figures (a) and (b).

A · (a) Hypogynous; (b) Epigynous
B · (a) Perigynous; (b) Epigynous
C · (a) Perigynous; (b) Hypogynous
D · (a) Epigynous; (b) Perigynous
Solution: In figure (a) the other parts arise on the rim of the thalamus at the same level as the gynoecium, so the ovary is half inferior = perigynous. In figure (b) the gynoecium is at the highest point with other parts below it, so the ovary is superior = hypogynous. Answer: (a) Perigynous; (b) Hypogynous = option C.
NEET 2020

Ray florets have

A · Hypogynous ovary
B · Half inferior ovary
C · Inferior ovary
D · Superior ovary
Solution: Sunflower ray florets are epigynous. The thalamus margin grows up and fuses around the ovary, so the ovary lies below the other floral parts and is inferior. Answer: inferior ovary.

Frequently asked

What decides whether a flower is hypogynous, perigynous or epigynous?

The deciding factor is the position of the calyx, corolla and androecium with respect to the ovary on the thalamus. If these parts are below the ovary the flower is hypogynous, if around it at the same level it is perigynous, and if above the enclosed ovary it is epigynous.

How is ovary position linked to superior, half-inferior and inferior?

Hypogynous = superior ovary, perigynous = half-inferior ovary, epigynous = inferior ovary. NEET often asks the same idea using either the flower name or the ovary name, so learn both sets together.

Give one clear NCERT example of each type.

Hypogynous: mustard (also china rose, brinjal). Perigynous: rose (also plum, peach). Epigynous: guava (also cucumber and sunflower ray florets). These exact examples appear again and again in NEET.

How does the ovary become inferior in epigynous flowers?

In epigynous flowers the margin of the thalamus grows upward, completely encloses the ovary and fuses with it. Because the ovary is now sunk below and surrounded, the other floral parts arise above it, making the ovary inferior.

Why is this topic important for NEET?

NEET asks this almost every year as a direct match-the-column or figure-identification question. Knowing hypogynous = superior = mustard, perigynous = half-inferior = rose/plum, epigynous = inferior = guava/cucumber wins you an easy mark and helps in family and floral-formula questions too.
