Root hairs develop from the region of maturation of the root. This is the zone just above the elongation zone, where cells have finished growing and have differentiated (become mature). Some epidermal cells here push out thin, thread-like root hairs that absorb water and minerals from the soil. Memory hook: hairs need MATURE skin, so root hairs come from the region of MATURATION.

Root hairs develop from which region of the root?

Root hairs develop from the region of maturation (also called the maturation zone or piliferous region). NCERT states clearly that from this region some of the epidermal cells form the fine thread-like root hairs. This is the most tested one-line fact for NEET.

Why not the region of elongation?

In the elongation region cells are still stretching and growing longer. Cells there are not yet fully differentiated, so they do not yet form hairs. Root hairs appear only after these cells mature, which happens in the next zone above, the region of maturation.

Why not the meristematic region?

The meristematic region only divides to make new cells. These cells are small, thin-walled, and busy dividing, not absorbing. Absorption structures like root hairs need mature, differentiated epidermal cells, so they cannot form in the dividing zone.

Are root hairs made from the root cap?

No. The root cap only protects the soft root tip as it pushes through soil. It has no absorbing job. Students often pick root cap as a trap answer, but the correct region is maturation, not the root cap.

Which region of the root absorbs water and minerals?

The region of maturation absorbs water and minerals, because that is where the root hairs are. The root hairs greatly increase the surface area of the root, so most water and mineral uptake happens in this zone.

Are root hairs single cells or many cells?

Each root hair is a thin extension of a single epidermal cell (a unicellular outgrowth). It is not multicellular. This helps distinguish a root hair from a stem hair or trichome for NEET.
