Neurotransmitter receptors are located ONLY on the post-synaptic membrane. Are the receptors on the pre-synaptic or the post-synaptic membrane?
On the post-synaptic membrane. The pre-synaptic neuron is the sender — it stores the neurotransmitter in synaptic vesicles and releases it into the synaptic cleft. The post-synaptic neuron is the receiver, so the specific receptors that catch the neurotransmitter must be on its membrane. NCERT states this word-for-word, and NEET has directly asked it (2017, 2026).
Why can't the receptors be on the pre-synaptic membrane?
Because that would make no sense for one-way signalling. The pre-synaptic side only RELEASES the chemical; if it also received it, the impulse could not move forward across the synapse. Receptors are on the post-synaptic membrane so the signal always flows in one direction: pre-synaptic to post-synaptic. This one-way flow is a key feature of chemical synapses.
Are receptors present on the synaptic vesicles?
No. This is a common trap option. Synaptic vesicles are tiny sacs inside the synaptic knob of the pre-synaptic neuron that STORE and carry the neurotransmitter. They fuse with the pre-synaptic membrane and release the chemical. Vesicles hold the neurotransmitter — they do not have the receptors. Receptors are only on the post-synaptic membrane.
What happens right after the neurotransmitter binds to the receptor?
Binding opens ion channels on the post-synaptic membrane. Ions enter, and this generates a new potential in the post-synaptic neuron. NCERT says this new potential may be either excitatory or inhibitory. This is why receptor location matters — the receptor is where the chemical signal is converted back into an electrical signal in the next cell.
Do receptors have to match the neurotransmitter?
Yes. NCERT calls them 'specific receptors'. Each neurotransmitter binds only to its own matching receptor on the post-synaptic membrane, like a specific key fitting a specific lock. This specificity is why the correct answer is always 'specific receptors on the post-synaptic membrane', not just any membrane.
