What is the actual difference between r-selected and K-selected species?

r-selected species produce a LARGE number of SMALL-sized offspring (oysters, pelagic fishes). K-selected species produce a SMALL number of LARGE-sized offspring (birds, mammals). r-selection maximises the intrinsic growth rate r, so it favours quantity; K-selection favours quality and survival near the carrying capacity K.

What does 'high r value' mean here? Is r a size or a speed?

r is the intrinsic rate of natural increase, not a size. A high r value means the population can grow fast. Populations evolve to maximise reproductive fitness, also called Darwinian fitness, which NCERT links to a high r value. So 'high r' means high growth potential, achieved by producing many offspring.

Does Darwinian fitness mean the strongest or fastest animal?

No. This is the most common NEET confusion. Darwinian fitness means REPRODUCTIVE success, not physical strength or speed. The organism that leaves the most surviving offspring in its habitat has higher fitness. NCERT directly equates Darwinian fitness with a high r value.

What is the difference between breeding once and breeding many times?

Some organisms breed only ONCE in their lifetime, for example Pacific salmon fish and bamboo. Others breed MANY times during their lifetime, for example most birds and mammals. NCERT gives these exact examples, and they are frequently asked, so memorise the species names.

Why do oysters and fishes make so many eggs while birds make few?

It is a trade-off shaped by the habitat. Oysters and pelagic fishes live where most offspring die young, so making a huge number of small offspring raises the chance that some survive (r-strategy). Birds and mammals invest heavily in a few large offspring and parental care to ensure survival (K-strategy). Life history traits evolve in relation to the abiotic and biotic constraints of the habitat.

Which offspring pattern goes with which strategy? I keep swapping them.

Lock it as a pair: r = many + small (quantity), K = few + large (quality). Examples: r-selected = oysters, pelagic fishes; K-selected = birds, mammals. If a question says 'large number of progeny with small size', the answer is r-selected.

Darwinian fitness means the physically strongest or fastest organism survives, so K-selected species with large bodies always have higher fitness.
Darwinian fitness means reproductive success (high r value), not body strength. A tiny oyster releasing millions of eggs can have very high Darwinian fitness. Fitness is measured by surviving offspring, not size or strength.
