Plant-animal mutualism is a (+/+) interaction where a plant gives an animal food (pollen or nectar) and the animal carries pollen from flower to flower, so both benefit. The fig and its fig wasp show an obligate one-to-one mutualism: each fig species is pollinated by only its own partner wasp species, and the wasp uses the fig fruit to lay eggs and feed its larvae on developing seeds. Is the fig and fig wasp relationship mutualism or commensalism?
It is mutualism (+/+), not commensalism. Both partners benefit: the fig gets pollinated by the wasp, and the wasp gets a place to lay eggs plus developing seeds to feed its larvae. In commensalism (+/0) only one species benefits and the other is unaffected. NEET has directly tested this: in a 2023 Odisha paper, 'female wasp and fig species' was the correct answer to which pair is NOT commensalism.
Why is the fig-fig wasp mutualism called 'obligate' and 'one-to-one'?
'Obligate' means neither species can complete its life cycle without the other. 'One-to-one' means a given fig species can be pollinated by only its own partner wasp species and no other. So each fig has its dedicated wasp and each wasp has its dedicated fig. This tight, species-specific dependence is why it is a favourite NEET example of close mutualism.
How is Yucca-moth different from the fig-fig wasp example?
They are the same type of interaction (obligate one-to-one mutualism), just different partners. In Yucca, the plant depends on the moth Tegeticula for pollination, and the moth's larvae feed on some of the developing seeds; neither can complete its life cycle without the other. NCERT calls this 'another' classic case alongside fig-wasp. NEET 2018 asked which plant shows this close relationship with a moth — the answer is Yucca.
Is ordinary pollination by bees or birds also mutualism?
Yes. When a plant offers rewards like pollen and nectar and the animal carries pollen while feeding, both benefit, so it is a plant-pollinator mutualism (+/+). NEET 2023 Phase 2 tested exactly this statement and the answer was mutualism. Note: not every pollination is mutualism — Ophrys orchid tricks a male bee with no reward (sexual deceit), which is a special case covered on the next page.
Why is a fig sometimes called a 'non-vegetarian' fruit?
Because a fig fruit encloses the tiny fig wasps that developed inside it, so the ripe fruit contains insect remains. This is a memory point, not a botanical rule. NEET 2025 gave two statements — 'fig is a non-vegetarian fruit as it has enclosed fig wasps' and 'fig wasp and fig tree exhibit a mutual relationship' — and marked both statements correct.

Only the orchid-on-tree, cattle egret-cattle and sea anemone-clown fish pairs are commensalism (+/0). 🧠 If BOTH partners get something, it can never be commensalism — commensalism needs one side to be a zero.
