What is the difference between resource partitioning and competitive release?

They describe opposite situations. Resource partitioning is a mechanism that lets two competing species CO-EXIST: they use the same limiting resource in different ways (different feeding times or foraging zones), so competition is reduced. Competitive release is what happens when a competitor is REMOVED: a species that was restricted to a small area by a stronger competitor suddenly expands its distribution. Partitioning = coexistence while both are present; release = expansion after the rival is gone.

Does resource partitioning go against Gause's competitive exclusion principle?

It does not break the principle, it works around it. Gause's principle says two closely related species competing for the SAME limiting resource cannot co-exist indefinitely and the weaker one is eliminated. NCERT adds that more recent studies show species facing competition may evolve mechanisms that promote co-existence rather than exclusion. Resource partitioning is exactly such a mechanism: by using the resource differently, the two species are no longer competing for the identical thing, so both survive.

What did MacArthur's warbler experiment show?

MacArthur studied five closely related species of warblers living on the SAME tree. Instead of one warbler eliminating the others, they co-existed because of behavioural differences in their foraging activities, they fed in different parts of the tree.
