The cell elongation phase is the middle phase of plant growth, found just next to (proximal to) the meristematic tip. The elongation zone (blue) sits just behind the meristematic tip: a large vacuole forms, the cell enlarges, and a thin new wall is deposited. Full wall thickening happens later in the maturation zone.

What are the three characteristics of the cell elongation phase?
NCERT gives exactly three: (1) increased vacuolation, (2) cell enlargement, and (3) new cell wall deposition. The cell takes in water into a big central vacuole, so it grows longer, and fresh cellulose is added to the wall to support the bigger size.
Is wall thickening in the elongation phase or the maturation phase?
Full wall thickening happens in the MATURATION phase, not elongation. In elongation the cell only lays down NEW cell wall material as it enlarges. NCERT says the maturation cells 'attain their maximal size in terms of wall thickening and protoplasmic modifications.' So thin new wall = elongation; thick final wall = maturation.
Does the cell in the elongation phase have a large conspicuous nucleus?
No. Large conspicuous nuclei and protoplasm-rich cells belong to the MERISTEMATIC phase. In the elongation phase the big central vacuole fills most of the cell, so the nucleus is pushed aside and is not the main feature. NEET 2026 tested exactly this.
Why does vacuolation increase during cell elongation?
The cell absorbs water, which collects in a large central vacuole. This water uptake creates turgor pressure that stretches the cell and makes it longer. This is why the region just behind the root tip is responsible for growth of the root in length.
What is the correct order of the three phases of growth?
Meristematic (at the tip) -> Elongation (just proximal to the tip) -> Maturation (further away, most proximal). As you move away from the root apex, you pass through these three zones in order.
