What exactly is differentiation in plants (simple definition)?

The cells made by root apical meristem, shoot apical meristem and cambium slowly mature and change to do a fixed job. This maturation is called differentiation. So differentiation = meristem cell turning into a specialised, working cell (like xylem, phloem or fibre).

What is the best NCERT example of differentiation?

The tracheary element (a water-carrying cell of xylem). To become one, the cell loses its protoplasm (living content) and builds a strong, elastic, lignocellulosic secondary cell wall. This lets it carry water over long distances even under high tension. Remember this one example for NEET.

Does the cell keep dividing after differentiation?

No. After differentiation the cell matures and generally loses the power to divide. This is why differentiation is the opposite direction of dedifferentiation, where a mature cell regains the power to divide (like interfascicular cambium forming from parenchyma).

Which structural changes happen during differentiation?

NCERT says cells undergo few to major changes in both cell wall and protoplasm. Example: losing protoplasm and adding a thick secondary wall to become a tracheary element. So both the wall and the inside contents can change.

Is differentiation the same as growth or development?

No. Growth is an irreversible increase in size or number. Differentiation is the change of cells into special types. Development is the whole sequence (growth + differentiation) from seed to death. Differentiation is just one step inside development.
