In GIFT, a donor's ovum (gamete) is placed into the fallopian tube of a recipient who cannot make an egg but has a healthy tube and uterus. Fertilisation then happens naturally inside her body (in vivo) — unlike IVF/ZIFT where fertilisation is done in the lab.

Inside the body. In GIFT, only the gamete (a donor ovum) is placed into the woman's fallopian tube, so fertilisation happens naturally inside her body (in vivo). This is the key difference from IVF, ZIFT and IUT, where fertilisation is done in the lab (in vitro).

What exactly is transferred in GIFT — egg, zygote or embryo?

Is GIFT the same thing as IVF?

No. In IVF the egg and sperm are fused OUTSIDE the body in the lab to form a zygote (test-tube baby method). In GIFT no lab fertilisation is done — the donor egg is placed into the fallopian tube and sperm fertilises it naturally inside the woman's body.
