Is vasectomy for males or females, and what about tubectomy?

Vasectomy is the sterilisation method in the male — a small part of the vas deferens is removed or tied through a small incision on the scrotum. Tubectomy is the sterilisation method in the female — a small part of the fallopian tube is removed or tied through a small incision in the abdomen or through the vagina. Does vasectomy stop sperm production (spermatogenesis)?

No. This is the most tested point. Vasectomy only blocks the vas deferens, so sperm cannot be transported into the semen. Spermatogenesis still continues normally in the testes, and sperm are still present in the epididymis. So it is wrong to say vasectomy prevents spermatogenesis — it prevents gamete transport.

Where is sperm still present after a vasectomy — epididymis or semen?

After vasectomy, sperm are still produced and are still present in the epididymis (before the cut). They are absent in the seminal fluid (semen), because the vas deferens block stops them from moving forward. NEET flips this: a statement saying 'no sperm occurs in epididymis' is INCORRECT.

What exactly does tubectomy block in the female?

Tubectomy removes or ties a part of the fallopian tube. This stops the ovum (egg) and sperm from meeting, so fertilisation cannot happen. The ovary still releases eggs (ovulation continues), but the egg can no longer travel down to meet sperm.

Can vasectomy and tubectomy be reversed?

NCERT states these techniques are highly effective but their reversibility is very poor. That is why sterilisation is treated as a terminal (permanent) method, chosen by couples who do not want any more children. NEET may describe this as 'irreversible sterility'.
