What is Reproductive Health? Meaning and WHO Definition

Biology · Reproductive Health · NEET

Reproductive health means total well-being in all aspects of reproduction. As per the WHO, this covers four things: physical, emotional, behavioural and social well-being — not just healthy reproductive organs. Memory hook: "PEBS" (Physical, Emotional, Behavioural, Social) — a reproductively healthy society has normal organs AND normal, respectful relations in all sex-related matters.

WHO defines reproductive health as total well-being in reproduction across four aspects — Physical, Emotional, Behavioural, Social (PEBS). Not just healthy organs.

Your doubts, answered

Does reproductive health only mean having healthy reproductive organs?

No. That is only the narrow meaning. NCERT says the term simply refers to healthy reproductive organs with normal functions, BUT it has a broader perspective that also includes the emotional and social aspects of reproduction. So healthy organs alone is not the full answer — this is a common trap.

What are the four aspects of reproductive health as per WHO?

Physical, emotional, behavioural and social well-being in all aspects of reproduction. Remember them as PEBS. If a NEET option lists only 'physical' or leaves one out, it is wrong. WHO uses the phrase 'total well-being'.

Is reproductive health the same as the reproductive system?

No. The reproductive system is the set of organs (studied in Human Reproduction). Reproductive health is a wider topic about the total well-being — physical, emotional, behavioural, social — connected to those organs and to reproduction. NEET tests both chapters, so keep them separate.

Who defined reproductive health — WHO or ICMR?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) gave the definition. Do not confuse WHO with ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) or CDRI. ICMR/CDRI are Indian bodies linked to contraceptive research (like Saheli), not to the definition of reproductive health.

What is a 'reproductively healthy society'?

NCERT: a society of people having physically and functionally normal reproductive organs AND normal emotional and behavioural interactions among them in all sex-related aspects. So it needs both normal organs and normal, healthy relationships — not just one.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Reproductive health means only having healthy reproductive organs with normal function.
Reproductive health means total well-being in all aspects of reproduction — physical, emotional, behavioural and social — as defined by WHO.
🧠 NTA loves the narrow trap. 'Healthy organs' is the simple meaning; the FULL WHO answer must include emotional, behavioural and social well-being too.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023 (Phase 2)

Which of the following statements are correct? (A) Reproductive health refers to total well-being in all aspects of reproduction. (B) Amniocentesis is legally banned for sex determination in India. (C) 'Saheli' - a new oral contraceptive for females was developed in collaboration with ICMR (New Delhi). (D) Amniocentesis is used to determine genetic disorders and survivability of foetus.

A · (A), (B) and (D) only
B · (A) and (C) only
C · (B) and (C) only
D · (D) and (C) only
Solution: Statement (A) is correct because WHO defines reproductive health as total well-being in all aspects of reproduction. (B) is correct — there is a statutory ban on amniocentesis for sex determination in India. (D) is correct — amniocentesis detects genetic disorders and foetal survivability. (C) is wrong because Saheli was developed at CDRI (Central Drug Research Institute), not ICMR. So (A), (B) and (D) are correct — option 1.
