How many agents of pollination are there and how are they grouped?

There are three agents. Two are abiotic (non-living): wind and water. One is biotic (living): animals. So it is 2 + 1. NEET often asks you to sort them into abiotic vs biotic, so remember wind and water are abiotic and animals are biotic.

Which pollinating agent is used by most plants?

Most flowering plants are pollinated by biotic agents (animals, mostly insects). Only a small number of plants use the abiotic agents wind or water. NCERT states this directly, and NEET has tested the word 'majority' — biotic, not abiotic, is the common one.

Are water hyacinth and water lily pollinated by water?

No. This is a classic trap. Even though they grow in water, their flowers rise above the water surface and are pollinated by insects or wind, just like land plants. True water pollination is seen in plants like Vallisneria, Zostera and seagrasses, not in water hyacinth or water lily.

Why do wind- and water-pollinated flowers produce so much pollen?

In wind and water pollination, pollen reaching the stigma is only a chance event. To make up for this uncertainty and the loss of pollen, these flowers produce enormous amounts of pollen compared with the number of ovules. This over-production is a compensation, not a way to attract animals.

Do wind- and water-pollinated flowers have colour and nectar?

No. Because they do not need to attract any animal, both wind- and water-pollinated flowers are not very colourful and do not produce nectar. Colour, scent and nectar are features of biotic (animal) pollination, so seeing 'colourful + nectar' should point you to biotic agents.

Water hyacinth and water lily grow in water, so they must be pollinated by water.
Their flowers emerge above the water surface and are pollinated by insects or wind, like most land plants. Real water pollination (hydrophily) is seen in Vallisneria, Zostera and seagrasses.
