A taxonomic key is a booklet or tool that lists characters (features) and their alternate forms to help you identify an unknown plant or animal. At each step it gives two opposite choices. You pick the one that matches your specimen and move to the next step, until you reach the name of the organism. It is based on similarities and differences in characters.
A couplet is the PAIR of two contrasting statements at one step of the key (for example: 'leaves simple' versus 'leaves compound'). A lead is just ONE statement inside that pair. So one couplet is made of two leads. Easy way to remember: couplet = the whole pair (like a couple = two people together); lead = one single line that 'leads' you to the next step.
'Dichotomous' means 'divided into two'. At every step the key splits into exactly two opposite options, so you are always choosing between only two possibilities. This two-way branching at each step is why it is called a dichotomous key. This is the type of key you use in NCERT and in NEET questions.
Take your specimen and look at the first couplet. Compare both leads with your specimen and pick the one that is true. That lead tells you which couplet to go to next. Repeat this step by step. Each choice removes many wrong options, and finally you reach the correct name. Separate keys are usually made for each taxonomic category like family, genus, and species.
Yes, a taxonomic key is one of the taxonomical aids (tools that help in study and identification), along with herbarium, museum, and catalogue. Note: taxonomical aids were removed from the current NCERT reprint and are not in the NEET 2026 core syllabus. But older NEET papers asked about keys, so you should still understand the definition of couplet, lead, and dichotomous key.
Match the items given in Column I with those in Column II and select the correct option: Column I: A. Herbarium, B. Key, C. Museum, D. Catalogue Column II: (i) A place having a collection of preserved plants and animals; (ii) A methodical list of species found in an area with brief description aiding identification; (iii) A place where dried and pressed plant specimens mounted on sheets are kept; (iv) A booklet containing a list of characters and their alternates helpful in identification of various taxa

A lead is a single statement (one line) within a couplet. Each couplet has two leads that describe opposite forms of the same character. You choose the lead that matches your specimen.
A couplet is the pair of two contrasting statements presented together at one step of the key. Each couplet is made of two leads.
The keys used in NCERT are dichotomous, meaning each step offers exactly two contrasting choices. Separate dichotomous keys are usually prepared for each category such as family, genus, and species.
A key helps you identify an organism using contrasting characters. A flora lists the plants of an area, and a manual gives information for identification and naming of species in an area. They are all taxonomical aids but serve slightly different purposes.
Taxonomical aids, including keys, were removed from the current NCERT reprint and are not in the core NEET 2026 syllabus. Still, learn the simple definitions of couplet, lead, and dichotomous key, since older NEET papers tested them.
