Why do we classify organisms at all — why not just study them one by one?

There are millions of kinds of plants and animals on Earth, and new ones are found all the time. No person can study each one separately. Classification puts similar organisms into groups. So instead of learning millions of separate facts, you learn about a few groups. This is the simple reason NCERT gives: classification makes the study of such a huge variety possible and convenient.

What exactly does 'classification' mean here?

Classification is the process of arranging organisms into groups (called taxa) based on characters they share. For example, all cats-like animals go into one group, all grasses into another. NCERT defines it as grouping organisms by easily observable characters. The groups are then arranged in levels — this is the taxonomic hierarchy.

How is classification linked to naming (nomenclature)?

Local names of the same plant change from place to place, so they cause confusion. Classification and a standard naming system fix this. Once organisms are grouped and each is given one scientific name (binomial nomenclature), biologists everywhere can talk about the same organism without confusion.
