Are all aromatic hydrocarbons carcinogenic?
No. NCERT says benzene and polynuclear hydrocarbons that contain MORE THAN TWO benzene rings fused together are the ones that are toxic and carcinogenic. So it is benzene plus the bigger fused-ring compounds that carry the cancer risk. Many small aromatic compounds are not listed as carcinogens in your syllabus. For NEET, just remember the key rule: benzene + fused rings with more than two rings = carcinogenic.
What does 'carcinogenic' mean in simple words?
Carcinogenic means 'cancer producing'. A carcinogen is a substance that can cause cancer in the body. NCERT directly says these polynuclear hydrocarbons 'possess cancer producing (carcinogenic) property'. This matters for NEET because the exam can ask you to name the property or the source of these compounds.
How are carcinogenic hydrocarbons formed?
They are formed on the INCOMPLETE combustion (incomplete burning) of organic materials like tobacco, coal, and petroleum. When these do not burn fully, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. This is why cigarette smoke and vehicle smoke contain them. Full burning gives CO2 and water; incomplete burning gives these harmful ring compounds.
