Solution: The innermost layer of the cortex of the root is the endodermis, a single layer of barrel-shaped cells whose tangential and radial walls bear a deposition of the water-impermeable, waxy substance suberin in the form of Casparian strips. These strips block the apoplastic pathway and force water and minerals through the cell membrane (symplast). The cortex, pericycle and epidermis lack Casparian strips.
