Flower Structure & Fruit Formation — NEET Biology

📚 Practice Concept
📖 NCERT Source

The flower is a modified shoot, meant for sexual reproduction. The flowers are arranged in different types of inflorescences. They exhibit enormous variation in structure, symmetry, position of ovary in relation to other parts, arrangement of petals, sepals, ovules etc. After fertilisation, the ovary is modified into fruits and ovules into seeds. Seeds either may be monocotyledonous or dicotyledonous. They vary in shape, size and period of viability. The floral characteristics form the basis of classification

Which of the following statements about the parts and arrangements within a typical flower is/are correct? S1: Aestivation describes the mode of arrangement of sepals or petals in the floral bud with respect to the other members of the same whorl. S2: The androecium is composed of stamens, each having a filament and an anther, where pollen grains are formed in pollen-sacs. S3: Epiphyllous stamens are those attached to the petals, as specifically seen in brinjal. S4: When more than one carpel is present and they are fused, the ovary is termed apocarpous, as in mustard and tomato. S5: Placentation refers to the arrangement of ovules within the ovary, with marginal, axile, and parietal being common types.

Correct answer: A S1, S2 and S5 are correct

Let's evaluate each statement: S1: Aestivation accurately defines the arrangement of sepals or petals in a floral bud. This statement is correct. S2: The androecium, consisting of stamens, each with a filament and an anther, where pollen grains are produced in pollen-sacs, is a correct description. This statement is correct. S3: When stamens are attached to petals, they are called epipetalous (e.g., brinjal). Epiphyllous stamens are attached to the perianth (e.g., lily). This statement is incorrect. S4: When carpels are fused, the ovary is termed syncarpous, not apocarpous. Apocarpous refers to free carpels (e.g., lotus, rose). Mustard and tomato have syncarpous ovaries. This statement is incorrect. S5: Placentation correctly describes the arrangement of ovules within the ovary, and marginal, axile, and parietal are indeed different types. This statement is correct. Therefore, statements S1, S2, and S5 are correct.
