During cyclic photophosphorylation electrons from PSI cycle back to PSI, producing ATP but no NADPH. This extra ATP supports the C₄ pathway. In maize, PEPCO continues to fix CO₂ in mesophyll even when CO₂ supply is reduced and the Calvin cycle in bundle sheath continues partially. The C₄ pathway concentrates CO₂ around RuBisCO, so photorespiration is avoided.
