Assertion (A): Chromosomes were named based on their staining properties during microscopic observation. Reason (R): The term chromosome means “colored bodies” because they were visualized by staining techniques.
Correct answer: A — If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
NCERT confirms chromosomes were named for staining properties (Assertion true). NCERT states “These were called chromosomes (colored bodies, as they were visualised by staining)” (Reason true). The Reason explains WHY they got this name - because staining made them appear as colored structures under microscope.
