Protoxylem vs Metaxylem in Roots and Stems

Biology · Anatomy of Flowering Plants · NEET

Protoxylem is the xylem that forms FIRST in a plant. It has narrow cells with spiral or annular wall thickenings. Metaxylem forms LATER, has wide cells, and helps in strong water flow. Memory hook: "Proto = first + thin, Meta = mature + thick." Their POSITION matters most for NEET: in stems protoxylem is towards the centre (endarch), in roots protoxylem is towards the outside (exarch).

Your doubts, answered

Which forms first, protoxylem or metaxylem?

Protoxylem forms first. The prefix 'proto' means first. It is the earliest xylem made by the plant while the organ is still growing and stretching. Metaxylem forms after (meta = later), once growth slows down. This order is why NEET asks about the DIRECTION of xylem maturation.

Why does protoxylem have narrow cells and metaxylem have wide cells?

When protoxylem forms, the plant part is still growing longer, so its cells stay narrow and have spiral (helical) or ring-like (annular) thickenings that can stretch. Metaxylem forms after growth stops, so its cells can be wide with fixed pitted or reticulate walls. Wide metaxylem vessels carry more water.

Where is protoxylem in a stem versus a root?

In a stem, protoxylem lies towards the centre (pith side) and metaxylem towards the outside. This is called ENDARCH. In a root, protoxylem lies towards the outside (periphery) and metaxylem towards the centre. This is called EXARCH. This single difference is a very common NEET question.

Do endarch and exarch describe protoxylem or secondary xylem?

They describe the position of the PROTOXYLEM, not the secondary xylem. This is a classic NEET trap. NEET 2023 gave a wrong statement saying endarch/exarch describe secondary xylem position, and the correct answer marked that statement as false.

Is protoxylem or metaxylem closer to the pith in a root?

In a root, METAXYLEM is closer to the centre (near the pith or centre), and protoxylem is closer to the periphery. Roots are exarch. Remember: in roots the OLDER-formed metaxylem sits inside, protoxylem outside.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Endarch and exarch describe the position of the secondary xylem in the plant body.
Endarch and exarch describe the position of the PROTOXYLEM (the first-formed primary xylem). Endarch = protoxylem towards the centre (stems); exarch = protoxylem towards the periphery (roots).
🧠 When a statement links endarch/exarch to 'secondary xylem', it is a trap. These words ALWAYS point to protoxylem position. Roots are exarch, stems are endarch.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023 Phase 1

Statement I: Endarch and exarch are the terms often used for describing the position of secondary xylem in the plant body. Statement II: Exarch condition is the most common feature of the root system. Choose the correct answer:

A · Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
B · Both Statement I and Statement II are not false.
C · Statement I is correct but Statement II is false.
D · Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true.
Solution: Statement I is WRONG: endarch and exarch describe the position of the PROTOXYLEM (first-formed primary xylem), not the secondary xylem. Endarch means protoxylem towards the centre (stems); exarch means protoxylem towards the periphery. Statement II is TRUE: roots have an exarch arrangement. So Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true, giving option (D).
NEET 2023 Phase 2

The transverse section of a plant part showed polyarch, radial and exarch xylem, with endodermis and pericycle. The plant part is identified as:

A · Dicot stem
B · Monocot stem
C · Monocot root
D · Dicot root
Solution: Exarch xylem means protoxylem lies towards the periphery, which is a ROOT feature. Polyarch (more than six xylem bundles) plus radial arrangement, endodermis and pericycle is diagnostic of a MONOCOT root. Dicot roots are di- to tetrarch; stems have endarch, conjoint bundles. So the answer is (C) Monocot root.

Frequently asked

What is the main difference between protoxylem and metaxylem?

Protoxylem forms first, has narrow cells with spiral or annular wall thickenings. Metaxylem forms later, has wide cells with pitted or reticulate walls and carries more water.

Is the root endarch or exarch?

The root is exarch. Protoxylem lies towards the periphery (outside) and metaxylem towards the centre. This is a fixed NEET fact.

Is the stem endarch or exarch?

The stem is endarch. Protoxylem lies towards the centre (pith) and metaxylem towards the outside. Dicot stem vascular bundles have endarch protoxylem.

What does protoxylem turn into during growth?

Protoxylem does not turn into metaxylem. They are separate. Protoxylem forms during active elongation; its stretchable spiral cells often get crushed later, while metaxylem stays as the main water pipe.

Why is protoxylem important for NEET?

NEET frequently tests protoxylem POSITION (endarch vs exarch) to identify root vs stem and monocot vs dicot. Knowing protoxylem is first-formed and its direction of maturation answers many diagram-based questions.
