Choanocytes are special cells inside a sponge. Each one has a flagellum (a whip-like tail) surrounded by a thin collar of tiny finger-like parts. Because of this collar shape, they are also named collar cells. The two names mean the same cell. The flagellum beats to create a water current, and the collar traps tiny food particles from the water. For NEET, remember: choanocyte = collar cell, and it is flagellated.
The canal system is the path that water follows inside a sponge. Water enters through many tiny pores called ostia in the body wall. It flows into a central hollow cavity called the spongocoel.
