What exactly are choanocytes and why are they also called collar cells?

Choanocytes are special cells inside a sponge. Each one has a flagellum (a whip-like tail) surrounded by a thin collar of tiny finger-like parts. Because of this collar shape, they are also named collar cells. The two names mean the same cell. The flagellum beats to create a water current, and the collar traps tiny food particles from the water. For NEET, remember: choanocyte = collar cell, and it is flagellated.

What is the canal system in Porifera in simple words?

The canal system is the path that water follows inside a sponge. Water enters through many tiny pores called ostia in the body wall. It flows into a central hollow cavity called the spongocoel. Then it leaves through one large opening at the top called the osculum. NCERT says this water transport (canal) system helps in food gathering, respiratory exchange (breathing), and removal of waste. Sponges have no mouth or gut, so this water flow does the job instead.

What is the difference between ostia and osculum? I keep mixing them up.

Ostia are the many small pores where water ENTERS the sponge (in-current pores). The osculum is the ONE large opening where water EXITS. Memory trick: Ostia has many holes (many small letters feel), osculum is the single big Out-door. In NEET matching questions, if a cell asks 'exit of water', the answer is osculum, not ostia.

What lines the spongocoel and the canals?

Choanocytes (collar cells) line the spongocoel and the canals. This is the exact NCERT line and it was asked directly in NEET 2017. Do not confuse this with mesenchymal cells or ostia. The flagellated collar cells sit on the inner surface and their beating flagella keep the water moving through the whole canal system.

Do sponges have a water vascular system like starfish?

No. This is a very common trap. Sponges (Porifera) have a canal system, also called a water transport system. Echinoderms like Asterias (starfish) have a water vascular system, which is totally different and used for locomotion, food capture, and respiration. NEET loves to swap these two. Canal system = Porifera. Water vascular system = Echinodermata.

How does a sponge eat if it has no mouth?

Digestion in sponges is intracellular, meaning it happens inside individual cells, not in a stomach. As water flows through the canal system, choanocytes trap food particles on their collars. The food is then digested inside cells. So the sponge feeds by filtering water — this is why sponges are called filter feeders. Remember: no digestive cavity, digestion is intracellular.
