The canal system (also called the water transport system) is the network of pores and canals that moves water through the sponge body. Water enters through ostia, passes into the central cavity (spongocoel), and exits through the osculum. Choanocytes line the spongocoel and the canals. Do NOT confuse this. Ostia and osculum are OPENINGS (holes), not cells. Choanocytes (also called collar cells) are flagellated cells that beat their flagella to create the water current and trap food. NEET 2017 asked this exact thing: 'the spongocoel is lined with flagellated cells called ___' and the answer is Choanocytes.
Digestion in sponges is INTRACELLULAR — meaning food is digested INSIDE individual cells, not in a gut cavity. Sponges have no true digestive tract. Choanocytes trap food particles from the water and digestion happens within cells. This matters for NEET because triploblastic animals from Coelenterata onwards start using extracellular digestion, so intracellular digestion is a marker of the simplest animals like Porifera.
Sponges are hermaphrodite — sexes are NOT separate, so the same individual makes both eggs and sperms.
