Why are mammary glands called the most unique mammalian feature?

Because no other animal class feeds its babies with milk. Birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians all lack milk glands. Hair is also found only in mammals, but NCERT specifically opens the Mammalia section by saying 'The most unique mammalian characteristic is the presence of milk producing glands (mammary glands).' So if a question asks for the single most unique feature, the answer is mammary glands, not hair.

What is a pinna and why is it unique to mammals?

The pinna is the outer, visible flap of the ear on the side of the head. It funnels sound into the ear. Other vertebrates hear too, but they do not have this external ear flap sticking out. Birds and reptiles have only an ear opening, no pinna. So the presence of a pinna is a mammal-only feature and NEET uses it as a trick option.

Are all mammals viviparous? Do they all give birth to babies?

No. Most mammals are viviparous (they give birth to live young), but NCERT says 'They are viviparous with few exceptions.' The egg-laying mammals like Ornithorhynchus (Platypus) are oviparous. This is why exam statements saying 'ALL mammals are viviparous' are marked WRONG. Viviparity is a common feature but not a universal one, so do not use it as the 'unique' feature in tricky questions.

Do mammals show direct or indirect development?

Mammals show DIRECT development. The young one looks like a small adult when born, there is no larval stage and no metamorphosis. This is why any option saying 'indirect development' for mammals is wrong. In NEET 2023 the wrong option (c) tried to trap students with 'hairs, pinna and indirect development' - it is wrong only because of 'indirect development'.

What other body features help identify a mammal in NEET?

Besides hair, mammary glands and pinna, NCERT lists: two pairs of limbs adapted for walking, running, climbing, swimming or flying; heterodont teeth (different types of teeth like incisors, canines, molars set in sockets in the jaws); a four-chambered heart; warm-blooded (homeothermic) body; and a muscular diaphragm for breathing. These help you tell a mammal apart from a bird or reptile.
