Protected Areas of India: Biosphere Reserves, National Parks and Sanctuaries

Biology · Biodiversity and Conservation · NEET

Protected areas of India are legally protected regions where wildlife and habitat are conserved in their natural home. NCERT names three types: biosphere reserves, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. All three are in-situ conservation (species stay in their own ecosystem), not ex-situ. Memory hook: "Bio-Nat-Sanct = save them at HOME" - they are all in-situ.

The three zones of a biosphere reserve. The core zone is legally protected with no human activity; the buffer zone allows limited regulated use; the transition zone permits human settlement and farming. NEET 2017 tested the core zone directly.

Your doubts, answered

Are national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in-situ or ex-situ conservation?

They are in-situ conservation. In-situ means we protect the species inside its own natural habitat. Biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and sacred groves are all in-situ. Ex-situ (zoos, botanical gardens, seed banks, cryopreservation) is when the species is taken OUT of its habitat. NEET repeatedly tests this in-situ vs ex-situ split, so fix it in memory.

What are the three zones of a biosphere reserve?

A biosphere reserve has three zones. (1) Core zone: the innermost area, legally protected, NO human activity allowed. (2) Buffer zone: limited, regulated activity like research and education. (3) Transition zone: the outermost area where settlements and farming are allowed. NEET 2017 asked which zone allows no human activity - the answer is the core zone.

What is the difference between a national park and a wildlife sanctuary?

Both are in-situ protected areas, so for NEET they are grouped together. The fine difference: a national park has stricter protection and no human activity or grazing is allowed inside it, while a wildlife sanctuary gives protection mainly to animals and may allow some limited human activity like grazing or collection of forest produce. NCERT lists both simply as legally protected areas, so questions rarely go deeper than that.

How many biosphere reserves, national parks and sanctuaries does India have?

As per NCERT Class XII, India has 14 biosphere reserves, 90 national parks and 448 wildlife sanctuaries. Learn these three numbers exactly - direct fill-in-the-blank style questions have used them. Note the real-world figures keep rising, but for NEET always answer with the NCERT numbers.

Is a sacred grove a protected area or a separate thing?

A sacred grove is also in-situ conservation, but it is a cultural/religious method, not a government-notified protected area. Tracts of forest were set aside and worshipped, giving total protection to trees and wildlife. Sacred groves are found in Meghalaya (Khasi and Jaintia Hills), Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, Western Ghats of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and parts of Madhya Pradesh. NEET often puts sacred groves in the in-situ list to trap you into calling it ex-situ.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Marking National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary as ex-situ conservation because they are 'special protected places'.
Biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and sacred groves are ALL in-situ. Ex-situ = zoos, botanical gardens, seed/gene banks, cryopreservation, wildlife safari parks - species taken out of habitat.
🧠 If the species stays in its OWN forest, it is in-situ. If it is moved out, it is ex-situ.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2017

The region of Biosphere Reserve which is legally protected and where no human activity is allowed is known as

A · Core zone
B · Buffer zone
C · Transition zone
D · Restoration zone
Solution: The core zone is the innermost, legally protected area of a biosphere reserve where no human activity is permitted. The buffer zone allows limited regulated activity (research, education) and the transition zone permits settlements and farming. There is no standard 'restoration zone'.
NEET 2019

Which one of the following is not a method of in situ conservation of biodiversity?

A · Biosphere Reserve
B · Wildlife Sanctuary
C · Botanical Garden
D · Sacred Grove
Solution: Botanical garden is ex-situ conservation (plants grown outside their natural habitat). Biosphere reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and sacred groves are all in-situ, protecting species inside their own ecosystem.
NEET 2026

Which of the following is an in situ conservation method?

A · Sacred Groves
B · Wildlife Safari Parks
C · Botanical Gardens
D · Seed Banks
Solution: Sacred groves are in-situ conservation. Wildlife safari parks, botanical gardens and seed banks are all ex-situ methods where the species is kept outside its natural habitat.

Frequently asked

Which are the protected areas mentioned in NCERT for India?

Biosphere reserves, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Sacred groves are also in-situ but are a cultural tradition, listed separately.

Which zone of a biosphere reserve has no human activity?

The core zone. It is the innermost, legally protected area. Buffer and transition zones allow increasing levels of human use.

Are protected areas in-situ or ex-situ?

All protected areas (biosphere reserves, national parks, sanctuaries) are in-situ conservation - the species is conserved in its natural habitat.

How many national parks does India have according to NCERT?

NCERT states India has 90 national parks, along with 14 biosphere reserves and 448 wildlife sanctuaries.

Is a wildlife safari park in-situ or ex-situ?

A wildlife safari park is ex-situ conservation, unlike a wildlife sanctuary which is in-situ. NEET uses this near-identical wording as a trap.
