In-situ. A biodiversity hotspot is a real region on the map with very high species richness and high endemism. We protect the species by protecting that whole region, so the organisms stay in their natural home. That is the definition of in-situ. NEET has trapped students here because a hotspot sounds like a special program, but it is on-site protection.
Is a sacred grove in-situ conservation?
Yes. A sacred grove is a tract of forest protected by religious or cultural tradition, where all trees and wildlife are given total protection inside their natural habitat. Because the species stay in their own home, it is in-situ. This is a very common NEET point (NEET 2018 and NEET 2026 both tested it). Do not confuse it with a botanical garden, which is ex-situ.
What is the difference between in-situ and ex-situ conservation?
In-situ = on-site: we protect the organism inside its natural habitat by saving the whole ecosystem (forest, reserve).
