How Do We Conserve Biodiversity? In-situ vs Ex-situ Conservation

Biology · Biodiversity and Conservation · NEET

We conserve biodiversity in two ways. In-situ (on-site) conservation protects the whole ecosystem in its natural place, so we "save the forest to save the tiger." Ex-situ (off-site) conservation takes a threatened species out of its habitat and gives it special care in a zoo, garden, or gene bank. Memory hook: In-situ = In its home. Ex-situ = Exit the home.
How Do We Conserve Biodiversity?IN-SITU (on-site)Species stays in its natural homeSave whole ecosystem- Biosphere reserves- National parks- Wildlife sanctuaries- Sacred grovesEX-SITU (off-site)Species taken OUT of its homeSpecial care for one species- Zoos, botanical gardens- Wildlife safari parks- Seed / gene banks- Cryopreservation, tissue culture
Two approaches to biodiversity conservation: in-situ keeps the species in its natural habitat by protecting the whole ecosystem, while ex-situ removes the threatened species and cares for it off-site.

Your doubts, answered

Is a national park in-situ or ex-situ conservation?

A national park is in-situ. The species stays inside its own natural habitat and the whole area is protected. NCERT lists biosphere reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries as legally protected in-situ methods. NEET 2022 tested exactly this: 'National Parks' was the odd one out among ex-situ methods because it is in-situ.

Are sacred groves in-situ or ex-situ?

Sacred groves are in-situ. They are tracts of forest given total protection through religious and cultural tradition, so the trees and wildlife are saved inside their natural habitat. NEET repeatedly uses sacred groves as an in-situ 'exception' in ex-situ lists (2018, 2026). They are found in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya) and Aravalli Hills (Rajasthan).

Is cryopreservation in-situ or ex-situ?

Cryopreservation is ex-situ. It preserves gametes of threatened species in viable and fertile condition for long periods at very low temperature, outside the natural habitat. Along with in-vitro fertilization, tissue culture (micropropagation), seed banks, and gene banks, it is a modern ex-situ technique. NEET 2025 matched 'Ex situ conservation' with 'Cryopreservation'.

Is a seed bank or botanical garden in-situ or ex-situ?

Both are ex-situ. Seeds of different genetic strains are stored off-site in seed banks, and botanical gardens keep plants out of their natural habitat in a special setting. Zoological parks, botanical gardens, and wildlife safari parks all serve the ex-situ purpose. NEET 2019 marked 'Botanical Garden' as NOT an in-situ method for this reason.

Which method is better, in-situ or ex-situ?

In-situ is the preferred first choice because it protects the entire ecosystem and lets the species keep evolving naturally. Ex-situ is a rescue backup used when a species is endangered or already extinct in the wild and needs urgent special care. For NEET, remember: in-situ = whole ecosystem saved on-site; ex-situ = single threatened species saved off-site.

⚠️ The NEET trap
National parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and sacred groves are ex-situ because they are man-managed protected sites.
National parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, and sacred groves are all IN-SITU. The species stays inside its natural habitat. Ex-situ means the species is taken OUT (zoo, botanical garden, safari park, seed bank, gene bank, cryopreservation, tissue culture, in-vitro fertilization).
🧠 NTA loves the 'odd one out' format. Scan the list: whatever removes the species from its home is ex-situ; everything protected in its home is in-situ.

Real NEET questions

2022

Which of the following is not a method of ex situ conservation? (NEET 2022)

A · In vitro fertilization
B · National Parks
C · Micropropagation
D · Cryopreservation
Solution: Ex-situ conservation takes threatened species out of their habitat and uses in-vitro fertilization, micropropagation (tissue culture), and cryopreservation. National Parks protect species within their natural habitat, so they are in-situ, not ex-situ. NCERT Ch 13, p.225.
2019

Which one of the following is not a method of in situ conservation of biodiversity?

A · Biosphere Reserve
B · Wildlife Sanctuary
C · Botanical Garden
D · Sacred Grove
Solution: In-situ conservation protects organisms inside their natural habitat: biosphere reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and sacred groves. A botanical garden keeps plants in a special off-site setting, so it is ex-situ and the odd one out. NCERT Ch 13, p.225.
2017

The region of Biosphere Reserve which is legally protected and where no human activity is allowed is known as (NEET 2017)

A · Core zone
B · Buffer zone
C · Transition zone
D · Restoration zone
Solution: The core zone is the innermost, legally protected area of a biosphere reserve where no human activity is allowed. The buffer zone permits limited regulated activity and the transition zone permits more human use. Biosphere reserves are an in-situ measure. NCERT Ch 13, p.225.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between in-situ and ex-situ conservation in one line?

In-situ protects the species inside its natural habitat by saving the whole ecosystem; ex-situ takes the threatened species out of its habitat and gives it special care in an off-site setting.

Give examples of in-situ conservation.

Biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biodiversity hotspots, and sacred groves are in-situ examples.

Give examples of ex-situ conservation.

Zoological parks (zoos), botanical gardens, wildlife safari parks, seed banks, gene banks, cryopreservation of gametes, in-vitro fertilization, and tissue culture (micropropagation) are ex-situ examples.

What are the three zones of a biosphere reserve?

Core zone (legally protected, no human activity), buffer zone (limited regulated activity like research and education), and transition zone (more human use like settlements and agriculture).

Why is in-situ preferred over ex-situ for NEET?

In-situ saves the entire ecosystem and lets species keep evolving naturally, so 'we save the forest to save the tiger.' Ex-situ is only a backup for species that are endangered or already extinct in the wild.
