Which part of the bacteria gives the sticky character — cell wall or glycocalyx?

The glycocalyx gives the sticky character, NOT the cell wall. This exact idea was asked in NEET 2017. The glycocalyx is a sugary coating (sugar + protein) that lies OUTSIDE the cell wall. Because it is slimy and sticky, bacteria use it to stick to surfaces like teeth, rocks, or medical tubes. The cell wall only gives shape and strength, and the plasma membrane and nuclear membrane give no stickiness at all. So the sticky answer is always glycocalyx.

What is the bacterial cell wall made of?

The bacterial cell wall is made of peptidoglycan (also called murein). This is a mesh of sugar chains linked by short chains of amino acids. NCERT calls the bacterial wall 'non-cellulosic' — meaning it is NOT made of cellulose. Remember the chart: Bacteria wall = peptidoglycan, Plant wall = cellulose, Fungal wall = chitin. What is the difference between capsule and slime layer?

Both are just two forms of the same glycocalyx. If the layer is thick and tightly stuck to the wall, it is called a CAPSULE. If it is thin and loose (easy to wash off), it is called a SLIME LAYER. So glycocalyx is the general word, and capsule and slime layer are its two types. A capsule also protects some bacteria from being killed by white blood cells.

Is glycocalyx the same as the cell wall?

No. They are two separate layers. Going from inside to outside: plasma membrane → cell wall (peptidoglycan) → glycocalyx (sticky, outermost). The cell wall is rigid and always present in most bacteria. The glycocalyx is soft, sticky, and sits on top of the wall. Do not mix them up — NEET asks about the sticky one (glycocalyx) and the rigid shape-giving one (cell wall) separately.

Do all bacteria have a cell wall?

Almost all do, but there is one famous exception: Mycoplasma. Mycoplasma completely LACK a cell wall, which is why they are the smallest living cells and can change shape and pass through fine filters. This exception is a repeated NEET favourite, so pair it with the rule: 'Bacteria have a peptidoglycan wall, except Mycoplasma which has none.'
