Is Kingdom Protista unicellular or multicellular? This confuses me.

For NEET, follow NCERT exactly: Protista contains ALL single-celled (unicellular) eukaryotes. So the safe one-word answer is unicellular. The confusion comes because some protists (like slime moulds) can form a large mass or colony, but the basic body is still made of eukaryotic cells at the protist level. NCERT even says the boundaries of this kingdom are not well defined. In an exam, if the option says 'Protista = unicellular eukaryotes', mark it correct.

What are the 5 groups included in Kingdom Protista?

NCERT lists exactly 5: (1) Chrysophytes (diatoms and golden algae), (2) Dinoflagellates, (3) Euglenoids, (4) Slime moulds, and (5) Protozoans. Memory trick: C-D-E-S-P ('Cats Do Eat Small Prey'). Why is Protista called a 'link' kingdom or 'connecting' kingdom?

NCERT says Protista 'forms a link with the others dealing with plants, animals and fungi.' It sits in the middle because it has some plant-like members (photosynthetic protists like diatoms), some animal-like members (protozoans that eat food), and some fungus-like members (slime moulds). So Protista connects Monera (simple prokaryotes) below it to Plantae, Animalia and Fungi above it. This is why it is called a bridge or link kingdom.

What is the main difference between Monera and Protista?

The single biggest difference is the nucleus. Monera = prokaryotes (NO true nucleus, no membrane-bound organelles). Protista = eukaryotes (true, well-defined nucleus PLUS membrane-bound organelles like mitochondria). Both can be single-celled, so students mix them up. Trick: if the cell has a real nucleus, it can never be Monera. NEET 2019/2022 tested this: cyanobacteria are Monera (prokaryote), but slime moulds are Protista (eukaryote), not Monera.

How do protists reproduce? Sexually or asexually?

Both. NCERT states protists reproduce asexually AND sexually. The sexual reproduction happens 'by a process involving cell fusion and zygote formation'. So a protist can split on its own (asexual) or two cells can fuse to make a zygote (sexual). Do not write 'only asexual' in a NEET answer — that is a common trap. Some protists also move using flagella or cilia.

Are protists aquatic? Where do they live?

NCERT clearly says 'Members of Protista are primarily aquatic.' So the default answer for NEET is aquatic (water). They live in ponds, oceans, moist soil and even inside other organisms (some protozoans are parasites, like the malaria parasite Plasmodium). If an option says protists are mainly aquatic, mark it correct.
