Is a protein a homopolymer or a heteropolymer?

A protein is a HETEROPOLYMER, not a homopolymer. NCERT says this in one clear line: because there are 20 types of amino acids (like alanine, cysteine, proline, lysine), a protein is a heteropolymer. It uses many different monomers, so it cannot be a homopolymer.

Why is a protein called a heteropolymer?

Because its building blocks are not all the same. A protein chain is made by joining amino acids with peptide bonds, and there are 20 different amino acids to choose from. Since more than one type of monomer is present, the polymer is 'hetero' (different).

Is starch a homopolymer or heteropolymer?
