Vital Capacity (VC) is the maximum volume of air a person can breathe in after a forced expiration (or breathe out after a forced inspiration). Its formula is VC = Tidal Volume + Inspiratory Reserve Volume + Expiratory Reserve Volume (TV + IRV + ERV). Memory hook: VC is "everything you can move" — it leaves out only Residual Volume (RV), the air you can never push out. So VC = Total Lung Capacity minus RV.

Does vital capacity include residual volume (RV)?
No. This is the single most tested point. Vital Capacity = TV + IRV + ERV only. Residual Volume is the air that always stays in the lungs and can never be breathed out, so it is not part of VC. Any NEET option that adds RV (like IRV + ERV + TV + RV) is wrong — that one is actually Total Lung Capacity.
Is vital capacity the same as total lung capacity?
No. Total Lung Capacity (TLC) = VC + RV. TLC includes the residual air; VC does not. So VC is always smaller than TLC by exactly the Residual Volume. If TLC = 6000 mL and RV = 1200 mL, then VC = 4800 mL.
Why is residual volume left out of vital capacity?
Because VC measures air you can actually move in and out during breathing. RV is trapped air that keeps the alveoli open even after the hardest expiration, so a spirometer can never record it. You breathe air in and out around this fixed reserve, which is why RV sits outside VC.
What is the normal value of vital capacity?
For a healthy adult it is roughly 3500-4600 mL (about 4000-4800 mL in trained athletes). NEET usually gives you the component values (TV, IRV, ERV) and asks you to add them, so learn the formula rather than memorising one fixed number.
Vital capacity is IRV + ERV or IRV + ERV + TV?
It must include Tidal Volume. Correct formula is VC = IRV + ERV + TV. A common trap option is just IRV + ERV (leaving out TV) — that is incomplete and wrong. Always include the normal breath (TV) in the middle.
What is the difference between VC and Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)?
For NEET Class 11 NCERT, treat them as the same total volume. VC is the maximum air moved after a forced breath. FVC is that same volume measured when you exhale as fast and forcefully as possible. The number is essentially the same; NCERT uses the term Vital Capacity.
