Why is telophase called the opposite of prophase?

In prophase the chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes and the nuclear envelope and nucleolus disappear. In telophase the reverse happens: chromosomes decondense and lose their individuality, and the nuclear envelope and nucleolus reappear. So telophase reverses prophase and reassembles the resting-nucleus structures.

Does telophase produce two cells?

No. Telophase completes karyokinesis, which is division of the nucleus, and gives two daughter NUCLEI inside one cell. The cell itself splits into two cells only during cytokinesis (cytoplasm division), which usually begins during telophase but is a separate step. This nucleus-vs-cell point is a common NEET trap.

When does the nucleolus reappear during mitosis?

The nucleolus disappears during prophase and reappears during telophase, along with the nuclear envelope. The Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum, which also broke down earlier, reform in telophase too.

Do chromosomes remain condensed in telophase?

No. In telophase the chromosomes decondense (uncoil) and can no longer be seen as separate discrete structures. Each set of chromatin collects at a pole. This is why late-telophase nuclei look like a normal interphase resting nucleus rather than showing distinct chromosomes.
