Terrestrial vs Aquatic Ecosystems: Difference with Examples

Biology · Ecosystems · NEET

An ecosystem is divided into two main types. A terrestrial ecosystem is on land, like a forest, grassland or desert. An aquatic ecosystem is in water, like a pond, lake, river, wetland or estuary. Memory hook: "Terra = land, Aqua = water" — terra sounds like terrain, aqua sounds like aquarium.

NCERT splits ecosystems into terrestrial (forest, grassland, desert) and aquatic (pond, lake, river, wetland, estuary); crop fields and an aquarium are counted as man-made.

Your doubts, answered

Is grassland a terrestrial or an aquatic ecosystem?

Grassland is a terrestrial ecosystem. NCERT gives forest, grassland and desert as the three examples of terrestrial (land) ecosystems. Do not confuse grassland with a pond just because both may look flat and green.

Is a pond terrestrial or aquatic?

A pond is an aquatic ecosystem because it is in water. NCERT lists pond, lake, wetland, river and estuary as aquatic ecosystems. A pond is the classic small example used in ecology chapters.

Are crop fields and an aquarium natural or man-made ecosystems?

They are man-made ecosystems. NCERT clearly says crop fields and an aquarium may also be considered man-made ecosystems. So they are neither counted as natural terrestrial nor natural aquatic examples in the NCERT list.

What is the main difference between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems?

The main difference is the physical medium. Terrestrial ecosystems exist on land, so the surrounding environment is soil and air. Aquatic ecosystems exist in water, so the surrounding environment is water. For NEET, remember the two example sets, not just the definition.

Why does NCERT divide ecosystems into terrestrial and aquatic?

NCERT says the biosphere (the global ecosystem) is too big and complex to study at once. So it is split into two basic categories, terrestrial and aquatic, to make it easier to study. This split is a common one-mark fact in NEET.

⚠️ The NEET trap
An aquarium is an aquatic ecosystem and a crop field is a terrestrial ecosystem.
NCERT counts both a crop field and an aquarium as man-made ecosystems, not as natural terrestrial or aquatic examples.
🧠 If a human built and controls it, NCERT files it under man-made — do not sort it into the natural terrestrial or aquatic example list.

Frequently asked

What are the two basic categories of ecosystem?

Terrestrial (on land) and aquatic (in water). This is the exact split given in NCERT for the Ecosystem chapter.

Give three examples of terrestrial ecosystems.

Forest, grassland and desert. These are the three examples used by NCERT.

Give examples of aquatic ecosystems.

Pond, lake, wetland, river and estuary. All of these are water-based systems.

Is a forest an ecosystem?

Yes. A forest is a large terrestrial ecosystem. NCERT even notes an ecosystem can range in size from a small pond to a large forest or a sea.

Can the whole biosphere be one ecosystem?

Yes. Many ecologists regard the entire biosphere as a single global ecosystem, made of all local ecosystems on Earth.
