Why can't terrestrial animals excrete ammonia?
Ammonia is the most toxic nitrogenous waste and is very soluble, so it must be diluted in a large amount of water before it can be thrown out. Aquatic animals live in water and can lose water freely, so they excrete ammonia. Land animals have limited water and cannot spend so much of it on excretion, so they instead make urea or uric acid, which are less toxic and need far less water.
