Common Cold: Rhinoviruses and Why It Affects the Nose and Throat

Biology · Human Health and Diseases · NEET

The common cold is caused by Rhinoviruses. These viruses infect the nose and the respiratory passage but they do NOT infect the lungs. Memory hook: "Rhino" sounds like your nose (rhino = nose in Greek), so Rhinovirus attacks the NOSE, not the lungs.
Common Cold: Rhinovirus attacks NOSE, NOT lungsRhino-virusNose +respiratory passageLungsNOT infectedSymptoms (last 3-7 days):- Nasal congestion & discharge- Sore throat, hoarseness, cough- Headache, tirednessSpread: cough/sneeze droplets, contaminated pens, books, cups

Your doubts, answered

What organism causes the common cold?

Rhinoviruses cause the common cold. It is a VIRUS, not a bacterium. NEET often tries to confuse you by pairing common cold with Plasmodium (malaria) or bacteria. Remember only one word: Rhinovirus.

Does the common cold affect the lungs?

No. This is the most tested line in NCERT. Rhinoviruses infect the NOSE and the respiratory passage but NOT the lungs. Pneumonia (bacteria) infects the lungs; common cold (virus) does not. This one difference is a favourite NEET trap.

Is common cold caused by bacteria or virus?

It is caused by a virus (Rhinovirus). Do not confuse it with pneumonia, which is bacterial (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae). Both are air-borne, but the cause is different: cold = virus, pneumonia = bacteria.

What are the symptoms of common cold as per NCERT?

Nasal congestion and discharge, sore throat, hoarseness, cough, headache and tiredness. These symptoms usually last 3 to 7 days. NEET can directly ask the duration, so remember 3-7 days.

How does the common cold spread?

It spreads through droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person. These droplets are either inhaled directly or picked up from contaminated objects such as pens, books, cups and doorknobs. So it is an air-borne and contact disease.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Common cold is caused by Plasmodium (matching A-Common cold with I-Plasmodium).
Common cold is caused by Rhinoviruses (A-III). Plasmodium causes malaria, not cold.
🧠 In match-the-column questions, NEET swaps 'common cold' with Plasmodium or bacteria. Lock it: cold = Rhinovirus, always.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2024

Match List I with List II: List I: A. Common cold B. Haemozoin C. Widal test D. Allergy List II: I. Plasmodium II. Typhoid III. Rhinoviruses IV. Dust mites Choose the correct answer:

A · A-I, B-III, C-II, D-IV
B · A-III, B-I, C-II, D-IV
C · A-IV, B-II, C-III, D-I
D · A-II, B-IV, C-III, D-I
Solution: Common cold is caused by Rhinoviruses (A-III). Haemozoin is the toxic substance released when Plasmodium ruptures RBCs (B-I). Widal test diagnoses typhoid (C-II). Allergy is triggered by allergens like dust mites (D-IV). So the correct match is A-III, B-I, C-II, D-IV, which is option B.

Frequently asked

What is the causative agent of common cold?

Rhinoviruses. It is a viral disease of the nose and respiratory passage.

Why does the common cold not affect the lungs?

Because Rhinoviruses infect only the nose and upper respiratory passage. NCERT clearly states they do not infect the lungs. This is different from pneumonia, which does infect the lungs.

How long does the common cold last?

According to NCERT, the symptoms usually last 3 to 7 days.

Is common cold air-borne?

Yes. It spreads through droplets from a cough or sneeze, and also through contaminated objects like pens, books and cups. So it spreads by both air and contact.

Common cold vs pneumonia, what is the key difference for NEET?

Common cold = Rhinovirus (virus), attacks nose, not lungs. Pneumonia = bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae), attacks the alveoli of the lungs. Cause and site are both different.
