Is saliva a physical or physiological barrier?

Saliva is a PHYSIOLOGICAL barrier, not physical. Physiological barriers are acid in the stomach, saliva in the mouth and tears from the eyes — they all prevent microbial growth using body fluids. Students often wrongly put saliva under physical. Physical barriers are only the skin and the mucus coating of the respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. What are interferons and which barrier are they?

Interferons are proteins secreted by virus-infected cells. They are the CYTOKINE barrier of innate immunity. They protect nearby non-infected cells from further viral infection. Remember: interferons come from cells already hit by a virus, and they warn the neighbours. In NEET match questions, Cytokine barrier always pairs with Interferons.

Are neutrophils and macrophages part of a cellular or physical barrier?

They are the CELLULAR barrier. Certain leukocytes (WBCs) — PMNL-neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages in tissues and natural killer cells (a type of lymphocyte) — can phagocytose and destroy microbes. Because these are cells doing the defending, they form the cellular barrier, not the physical one. Skin and mucus are physical; the WBCs that eat microbes are cellular.

Is innate immunity specific or non-specific?

Innate immunity is NON-SPECIFIC. It is present at the time of birth and acts the same way against any foreign agent. It has no memory and does not make antibodies against a particular pathogen. Specificity and memory belong to acquired immunity. NEET 2025 directly asked which immunity is present at birth and non-specific — the answer is Innate Immunity.
