Germ Layers and Embryonic Development Month by Month

Biology · Human Reproduction · NEET

After implantation the inner cell mass forms three germ layers: ectoderm (outer), endoderm (inner) and mesoderm (middle) that appears between them. These three layers build every tissue and organ. Month timeline: heart forms after 1 month, limbs and digits by end of month 2, most organs by 12 weeks, hair on head in month 5, and full development by 9 months. Memory hook: "Heart-1, Limbs-2, Organs-3 months, Hair-5, Baby-9."

Left: the three germ layers as concentric layers (ectoderm outer, mesoderm middle, endoderm inner) building all organs. Right: NEET month-by-month timeline: heart 1 month, limbs and digits 2 months, most organs 12 weeks, hair and first movement 5 months, delivery at 9 months.

Your doubts, answered

In what order do the three germ layers appear?

The inner cell mass first splits into an outer ectoderm and an inner endoderm. Then the mesoderm appears LATER, in between these two. So order is: ectoderm and endoderm first, mesoderm last. But we still name them as ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm (outer, middle, inner) by position.

When does the heart form in the human embryo?

The heart is formed after ONE month of pregnancy. This is the earliest organ milestone NCERT gives. You can hear the heart sound through a stethoscope. NEET 2025 tested this exact fact.

When do limbs and digits develop?

By the END of the SECOND month of pregnancy, the foetus develops limbs and digits. Do not confuse this with 12 weeks. NEET 2026 matched 'limbs and digits' to 8 weeks (end of 2nd month).

Are major organ systems formed at 8 weeks or 12 weeks?

At the end of 12 WEEKS (first trimester), most major organ systems are formed. 8 weeks is WRONG. This is a classic NTA trap. By 12 weeks limbs and external genital organs are also well developed.

When does hair appear on the head?

The first foetal movements AND hair on the head appear in the FIFTH month. By 24 weeks (end of second trimester) the body is covered with fine hair, eyelids separate and eyelashes form. By 9 months the foetus is ready for delivery.

What is the difference between an embryo and a foetus?

'Embryo' is used in the early stage while organs are still forming. Once the major organ systems appear (roughly after the first trimester), NCERT starts calling it a 'foetus'. Same developing baby, different naming by stage.

From which germ layer is the amnion derived?

The amnion is an extra-embryonic membrane derived from ectoderm and mesoderm (amniotic ectoderm lined by extra-embryonic mesoderm). NEET 2018 asked this: answer is ectoderm and mesoderm.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Major organ systems are formed at the end of 8 weeks.
Major organ systems are formed at the end of 12 weeks (first trimester).
🧠 NTA swaps 12 weeks with 8 weeks. Remember: ORGANS by 12 weeks (end of first trimester), not 8. Heart-1 month, limbs-2 months, organs-12 weeks.

Real NEET questions

2025

Find the correct statements: A. Major organ systems are formed at the end of 12 weeks. B. Major organ systems are formed at the end of 8 weeks. C. Heart is formed after one month of gestation. D. Limbs and digits develop by the end of second month. E. Appearance of hair is usually observed in the fifth month.

A · B, C, D and E only
B · A, C, D and E only
C · A and E only
D · B and C only
Solution: NCERT: most major organ systems form by end of 12 weeks, so A is true and B (8 weeks) is false. Heart forms after 1 month (C true), limbs and digits by end of 2nd month (D true), hair on head in the 5th month (E true). Correct set is A, C, D and E = option B.
2026

Match List I with List II (embryonic development by month): A. Foetus movement starts and hair appears on the head B. Foetus develops limbs and digits C. Foetus develops external genital organs D. Body covered with fine hair; eyelids separate and eyelashes formed. List-II: (I) 24 weeks (II) 20 weeks (III) 8 weeks (IV) 12 weeks

A · A-IV, B-II, C-III, D-I
B · A-II, B-III, C-IV, D-I
C · A-III, B-II, C-IV, D-I
D · A-II, B-IV, C-III, D-I
Solution: Movements and hair on head = 5th month (~20 weeks, II). Limbs and digits = end of 2nd month (8 weeks, III). External genital organs well developed by 12 weeks (IV). Fine hair, eyelids separate, eyelashes = end of 2nd trimester (24 weeks, I). So A-IV? Note the key: A-II (20 wk), B-III (8 wk), C-IV (12 wk), D-I (24 wk) gives option 'A-II, B-III, C-IV, D-I'.
2018

The amnion of mammalian embryo is derived from

A · mesoderm and trophoblast
B · endoderm and mesoderm
C · ectoderm and mesoderm
D · ectoderm and endoderm
Solution: The amnion is an extra-embryonic membrane. It develops from the amniotic ectoderm lined externally by extra-embryonic mesoderm. Hence it is derived from ectoderm and mesoderm.

Frequently asked

What are the three germ layers and what do they form?

Ectoderm (outer), mesoderm (middle) and endoderm (inner). Together these three layers give rise to all the tissues and organs of the adult body.

Which germ layer appears last?

The mesoderm. First the inner cell mass forms ectoderm and endoderm, then mesoderm appears between them.

How long does human pregnancy last?

Human pregnancy lasts about 9 months. By the end of 9 months the foetus is fully developed and ready for delivery.

What is the correct month-by-month order for NEET?

Heart after 1 month, limbs and digits by end of 2nd month, most organ systems and external genitals by 12 weeks, first movements and hair on head in 5th month, fine hair and eyelashes by 24 weeks, delivery at 9 months.

What are stem cells in the inner cell mass?

The inner cell mass contains stem cells that have the potency to give rise to all the tissues and organs of the body.
