Menstrual Cycle vs Oestrus Cycle: Difference for NEET

Biology · Human Reproduction · NEET

The menstrual cycle happens in primates only — humans, apes and monkeys. The oestrus cycle happens in non-primate mammals like cows, sheep, rats, dogs and tigers. Both are cyclic reproductive changes; the main NEET point is: primate = menstrual, non-primate = oestrus. Memory hook: "Men (menstrual) are Primates; Estrus is for the rest (non-primates)."

Primates show the menstrual cycle (endometrium sheds as bleeding); all non-primate mammals show the oestrus cycle (no menstrual bleeding). This split is the core NEET fact.

Your doubts, answered

Is the menstrual cycle found in humans or in animals?

The menstrual cycle is found in primates only. This means humans, apes and monkeys. Other mammals do not have a menstrual cycle. They have an oestrus cycle instead. So the menstrual cycle is a special primate feature. NEET asks this directly, so remember: menstrual = primates.

Do humans have an oestrus cycle?

No. Humans do NOT have an oestrus cycle. Humans are primates, so humans have a menstrual cycle. The oestrus cycle is only in non-primate mammals like cows, sheep, rats, deer, dogs and tigers. This is a common trap in NEET, so do not mix them up.

What is the main difference between menstrual cycle and oestrus cycle?

The main difference is the group of animals. Menstrual cycle is in primates (humans, apes, monkeys). Oestrus cycle is in non-primate mammals (cows, sheep, rats, dogs, tigers). Another difference: in the menstrual cycle the built-up uterus lining (endometrium) breaks down and comes out as bleeding if there is no pregnancy. In the oestrus cycle there is no such bleeding; the lining is reabsorbed.

Which animals show the oestrus cycle? Give NCERT examples.

NCERT lists these non-primate mammals as examples of the oestrus cycle: cows, sheep, rats, deer, dogs and tigers. These are exactly the examples NEET can ask, so learn this short list by heart. All of them are non-primates.

Why do primates menstruate but other mammals do not?

In primates, if the released ovum is not fertilised, the thick uterus lining (endometrium) breaks down and flows out as menstruation. In non-primate mammals, the lining is not shed as bleeding; the body reabsorbs it. For NEET, you mainly need the fact that only primates show menstruation, not the deep reason.

Is menstrual cycle the same as menstruation?

No, they are not the same. Menstruation is only ONE phase — the bleeding when the endometrium breaks down. The menstrual cycle is the whole repeating series of events (about 28/29 days) that includes menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase. So menstruation is a part inside the menstrual cycle.

⚠️ The NEET trap
First menstrual cycle at puberty is called menopause; oestrus cycle occurs in primates.
First menstruation at puberty is menarche (menopause is the STOP, around age 50). The oestrus cycle occurs in NON-primate mammals, not primates.
🧠 NEET 2023 tested this exact statement set. Two safe truths to lock: (1) non-primate mammals = oestrus cycle, (2) first cycle = menarche, last = menopause. Swapping menarche/menopause or primate/non-primate is the classic trap.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023

Which of the following statements are correct regarding female reproductive cycle? A. In non-primate mammals cyclical changes during reproduction are called oestrus cycle. B. First menstrual cycle begins at puberty and is called menopause. C. Lack of menstruation may be indicative of pregnancy. D. Cyclic menstruation extends between menarche and menopause.

A · A and D only
B · A and B only
C · A, B and C only
D · A, C and D only
Solution: A is correct: non-primate mammals show the oestrus cycle. C is correct: no menstruation may mean pregnancy. D is correct: cyclic menstruation runs from menarche to menopause. B is WRONG because the first menstrual cycle at puberty is called menarche, not menopause. So A, C and D only.
NEET 2018

Match Column I with Column II: Column I: a. Proliferative Phase b. Secretory Phase c. Menstruation Column II: i. Breakdown of endometrial lining ii. Follicular Phase iii. Luteal Phase

A · a-ii, b-iii, c-i
B · a-i, b-iii, c-ii
C · a-iii, b-ii, c-i
D · a-iii, b-i, c-ii
Solution: Proliferative phase = Follicular phase (ii). Secretory phase = Luteal phase (iii). Menstruation = breakdown of the endometrial lining (i). This bleeding phase is present in the menstrual cycle of primates but NOT in the oestrus cycle of non-primates.

Frequently asked

Which mammals have the menstrual cycle?

Only primates — humans, apes and monkeys. All other mammals have the oestrus cycle.

Give three examples of animals with the oestrus cycle.

Cow, dog and tiger are three NCERT examples. Others are sheep, rat and deer. All are non-primate mammals.

Is there bleeding in the oestrus cycle?

No. There is no menstrual bleeding in the oestrus cycle. Menstrual bleeding (endometrium breakdown) happens only in the menstrual cycle of primates.

Both cycles are controlled by which hormones?

Both are controlled by ovarian and pituitary hormones such as FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone. The hormone control is similar; the visible difference is the shedding of the endometrium in primates.

What is the average length of the human menstrual cycle?

About 28 to 29 days, as stated in NCERT. It repeats between menarche and menopause.
