Biology · Locomotion and Movement · NEET
Both cause joint pain, but the cause is different. Arthritis is the general word for inflammation of joints. Gout is one specific reason a joint gets inflamed: it happens when uric acid builds up in the body and forms sharp crystals inside the joint. So gout leads to joint inflammation, but it is a separate NCERT term. For NEET, remember: Arthritis = inflammation of joints; Gout = accumulation of uric acid causing joint inflammation.
Gout is caused by the accumulation of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is a waste product. When too much of it collects, it forms needle-like crystals that settle in joints (often the big toe), causing swelling and pain. The keyword NEET tests is 'uric acid'. If an option says 'accumulation of uric acid leading to inflammation of joints', that describes gout.
Be careful here, because NEET sets a trap. In the NCERT list, the autoimmune disorder is Myasthenia gravis, NOT arthritis. However, one specific type, rheumatoid arthritis, IS autoimmune (the body attacks its own joint cells). In NEET 2019 the answer to 'which is autoimmune' was Myasthenia gravis, and arthritis was the wrong option. But in NEET 2022, a statement calling rheumatoid arthritis non-autoimmune was marked INCORRECT. So: general arthritis = inflammation of joints; rheumatoid arthritis = autoimmune.
They are both skeletal problems but very different. Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. Osteoporosis is an age-related disorder with decreased bone mass and increased chances of fractures, and its common cause is decreased (low) levels of estrogen. Do not mix these: arthritis affects joints, osteoporosis affects bone mass. The uric acid keyword belongs to gout, not osteoporosis.
NCERT lists these skeletal/muscular disorders together: Myasthenia gravis (autoimmune, neuromuscular junction), Muscular dystrophy (genetic, progressive muscle degeneration), Tetany (rapid spasms due to LOW Ca2+), Arthritis (inflammation of joints), Osteoporosis (age-related, low bone mass, low estrogen), and Gout (inflammation of joints due to uric acid accumulation). NEET makes match-the-column questions from this exact list, so learn one keyword each.
Osteoporosis, an age-related disease of skeletal system, may occur due to
Which of the following diseases is an autoimmune disorder?
Which of the following is a correct match for disease and its symptoms?
Try the real previous-year questions from this chapter — each with the answer and a full solution.
Arthritis is any inflammation of joints; gout is joint inflammation caused specifically by the build-up of uric acid crystals.
Yes. Gout results from accumulation of uric acid in the body, which forms crystals in the joints and causes inflammation and pain.
General arthritis is listed as inflammation of joints. In the NCERT autoimmune slot, Myasthenia gravis is the answer. But rheumatoid arthritis, a specific type, is autoimmune, and NEET 2022 tested this.
Osteoporosis is an age-related disorder with decreased bone mass and fractures, caused mainly by decreased estrogen. Gout instead is caused by uric acid accumulation in joints. Different cause, different tissue.
NEET regularly frames match-the-column and single-fact questions from the joint and muscle disorders list. One keyword swap (uric acid, estrogen, autoimmune, genetic, low Ca2+) decides the answer, so exact recall scores easy marks.
